Her voice.

I love the show but I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds this cartoon weirdly sexual for something that's aimed at kids. Nothing explicit of course but you can see it often from the poses and expressions. Something about the subtlety makes me a lil bit uncomfortable, it's like I'm being pulled into a naughty place without anyone giving a proper heads-up.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Kids aren't going to get it. They really won't. Trust me.

This kind of shit? Is literally what made Disney successful.

pls explain

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care how children interpret the show??? Shit's making ME uncomfortable because I see how sexual the characters are written. I'm not used to watching cuddly kids' cartoons that explore these themes and it feels out of place.

You know? There is sex, but I think the right word is "mature themes." I mean it's not just the physical stuff, but actually deconstructing what would make a relationshp work, some of the other themes of love and abandonment and ptsd and the pain of loss, it's very mature themed for a cartoon aimed at kids. And it's still very much aimed at kids, which is why it's so interesting.

Let me play devil's advocate a bit.
When you were growing up, you were exposed to a reasonable amount of adults in your life, right? They had their grown up moods, and you had your childish ones. Every once in awhile, you and the grown ups saw eye to eye. And you all learned about each other then.

SU is deliberately like that.

All of the discomfort you are talking about just might be because SU reminds you of when you were little, and didn't always understand the adults around you.

It's Steven Universe's mother.

Maybe I'm just stupid, but why dose everyone think that episode was super sexual?
Like the only "sexual" joke I remember is that one moment near the end where Greg and Rose talk about how much fun they're had dating. :/

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Pearl and Rose's whole dance as well as the duet with Greg was very sexually charged.

Rose's lyrics "I like the way... human's play." the dance, and definitely that "Oh yes." at the end.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"I like the way human's play" isn't sexual at all. You're really reaching there.

I honestly don't think she's sexual at all though? More enigmatic space rock alien.

Although Greg and Pearl are totally into her, the episode's main focus was that Rose Quartz saw Greg as merely an entertaining earth creature, and Greg was struggling that the object of his love wasn't taking their relationship seriously.

And Pearl's romantic feelings towards her are hella one-sided. Rose only loves Pearl as family, not as a lover.

Unless, you're really talking about how it bothers you that the characters are acting sexually towards Rose Quartz, and I totally misinterpreted this secret. :p

As someone who's not in this fandom, but has seen the fusion gif'd all over her dash, can you explain to me that if Rose feels this way for Pearl, why they were implied to have a mouth-to-mouth kiss during their dance?

I get this implication because there was a strategic curl of Rose's hair covering their faces and Greg did his best to mirror the dance, which also included a kiss from him, which surprised Rose because she had never been kissed by something (a human) she was so fascinated with?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I was always under the impression that Rose and Pearl had a kinda friends with benefits kinda thing going on or something. That, or Rose doesn't see kissing as inherently romantic as humans do and is oblivious to Pearl's giant gay crush. .

Twitter and tumblr got lit up with asks. One of the writers (not Rebecca, Ian I think?) said explicitly that yeah, it's not just entirely one sided but is more complicated then that.

Like Anon said above, I think Pearl definitely had some reciprocation from Rose, but how deep a relationship it was differed a lot from how deep she wanted it to be. Rose likely didn't realize that, since she does seem to be a bit of the fun having manic pixie dream girl and that was specifically what she was trying to be until Greg shocked her out of it by making so clear he wanted more.

I understand where you're coming from, there's definitely been scenes in things that made me feel uncomfortable because they've been unnecessarily sexually charged.

But this didn't bother me. idk it was just a sexy song. i mean rose and greg are like dating, they've got to flirt somehow. they eventually end up with a son. i find it interesting that they didn't just make the parent characters sexless.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually think that Garnet's and Amethyst's fusion was way more overtly sexual (it was even lampshaded by Pearl holding Steven's eyes shut).

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's even nicknamed "Sexy Fuse" on YouTube.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
This doesn't surprise me at all, seeing how anti sex parts of the Steven Universe fandom is.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to understand stuff here.
Do you mean the part of the SU fandom that was too worried about a Brony invasion a while ago? When people were worried about labeling fan art as NSFW? Is that it?
