OMG

I think animated movie would actually work so much better for this but you'd get the standard target audiences for animated movies and Wicked mixed up...

Wicked would look really cool as a 2d animated movie but it'd be hard to get it done by a western studio (anime, maybe.)

Hopefully not just like Phantom of the Opera, which was released in 2004, 18 years after the musical premiered, with two out of three leads unable to sing their parts, and which made a ridiculous mess of the backstory of the title character and set the main action of the plot before the titular opera house was completed, and during the one year that Paris was under seige by the Prussians and people were eating rats, cats, and zoo animals rather than starve.

Same, they've been talking about it for years but I'll believe it when I see it.

I honestly still do not get why they don't just film the original broadway performances. Not all of us can get to New York or even have the money to see those performances, let me see them in high quality and not the shitty cams on youtube I always resort to.

The answer to "why not film the Broadway show" is money and paperwork. They generally are filmed, then archived for later casts and historians and so on to watch. But the production values at least used to suck, because they were reference material and not meant for general release. Tickets are so expensive, producers don't want to take the chance that peoplw will pay for the filmed performance and never see the live show, and even for shows that have been running for years, there would have to be entirely new contracts drawn up for every actor, and I think all the creative team too, in order to film and then sell copies of the film. I'm not 100% sure on this but I think "film" and "sell copies" are actually two separate contracts.

I could buy that they don't want to compete with ticket sales except most people I know who are into musicals/theater are really into the live experience of it all so I feel like sales would still be exactly the way they have been. Especially with broadway in particular.

I feel like selling copies could be lucrative, there's a large portion of musical fans who simply can't ever see their favorites, and even those who can still might buy a copy (like I've seen tours but never the original casts, so I'd kill for a high quality video of the original casts in my favorite musicals.)

By the "SB" logic the musical and the book are already horrible crimes against Oz so I'm not sure what you're trying to say??
