Begging inspires contempt.

Begging implies, IMHO, that you give the "beggar" money and they give nothing to you in return. With Patreon, you donate money and receive something for that donation. It's an "equal" exchange. If you don't like what you are supposed to receive in return for your money, well, find another person to support?...

+1 I don't understand why people have issue with something that is essentially a business? If you don't want to support it then don't but why is it bad for artists and writers to want to make a living?

It's not bad for artists of any kind (music, visual, performance, etc) to want to make a living. It just inspires a lot of jealousy when someone gets money for an activity that is perceived as "fun." This is especially true when that activity (drawing, playing an instrument, singing, dancing, writing) is a hobby to others. The more someone hates their day job, the more contempt they will show for someone who tries to make a living from their chosen hobby.
