I hate to be a cynic, but I have a hard time believing these internet panhandling stories unless I have proof.

Yeah me too. If you give money to these you have to accept that they might be scamming you. Just like people asking for money on the street.
If you're the kind of person who will be really upset by that, you should give your money to a different cause.

+1. When I have some money I don't mind giving it to people online with sick cats and hospital bills and so on, but it's a gift. If they're scammers, well, that's my bad luck.

Patreon demands results but yep, good policy. Recently ran into a whole fundraiser for a supposed cancer sufferer (I thought people ignored it as it had such stuff as the dude being in chemo and radiotherapy at same time). When vendors asked for any documents they were threatened and unfortunately they gave the organisators benefit of doubt and handed over few grand they raised. Why yes, fictional dude died.

Not that you should always disbelieve - if something interests you and a person has no files or history available, ask - they will most likely have stuff ready to share.
