We really need to change copyright law because part of the issue is we don't have as many stories in public domain as SHOULD be in public domain (blame Disney, because now we have corporations owning properties rather then creators and owning those rights for way longer then they should.)

I'm pro letting fanfic and fanart be profitable as long as it's original in some way/not a direct competition for the source material. Art has always taken from other art, copyright law needs to reflect that reality.
