It really would have helped if you had said from the getgo what sort of "wake up call" this was. You left it so that it could be just about anything.

No, OP laid it out pretty clearly in the secret. The wake up call is that popularity in fandom =/= lots of Patreon backers. The contrast is outlined right there, highlighted in blue.

Anyone who thinks this is a commentary about entitled fanfic writers just has a chip on their shoulder, so they're seeing everything through Bitter Fandom Goggles.

You would be surprised what people claim to be horrible in fandom. Someone making 300$ off of donations being seen as absolutely obscene isn't beyond the realm of possibilities.
