NCAA TOURNAMENT

(Anonymous) 2017-03-14 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Anybody doing brackets this year? Who'd you pick to win the title? I've got Villanova/UNC as the final game with Villanova to win the title.

I was looking at a bracket this morning and I'm confused by where the "First Four" winners go?

I have UNC over Villanova. Also I like West Virginia for the Final Four. and I have SMU beating Duke before losing to Nova and Michigan beating Louisville and Wichita State beating Kentucky. Really hating on those 2-seeds this year, lol

I'm supposed to be paying attention to this, because one of my co-worker's son is playing. But damned if I can ever remember when the games are on. I've finally got it down that I remember what team he's on, but that's about it. I just cheer him on whenever she gives me the updates.

So I think I'm working with a war criminal

[personal profile] thewakokid 2017-03-14 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This guy I'm working with was telling me about his time in the army. He was telling me that the Rules of Engagement were such that if a potential combatant was reaching for a suspected explosive, held a suspected explosive, or moved to throw a suspected explosive, he was allowed to open fire upon potential combatant.

If, however, the potential combatant had just thrown a suspected explosive, and it had already left a potential combatants hands the Rules of Engagement declared the potential combatant to not be a current threat, and therefore not to be harmed. Seems very odd to me, but then those are the rules, right?

My current work mate decided to end this happy little story by telling me "of course we would just say he was reaching for another explosive and shoot the fucker anyway! hahaha"

I just thought I'd share that with you all because I honest to God don't know how I'm supposed to process that. I mean, that's a war crime right?

Travel Thread

(Anonymous) 2017-03-14 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Any tips on scoring cheap flights? I've read Tuesdays are the best days to book but the prices don't seem any cheaper. I'm travelling late June to early July. It's a busy time, so I know it's going to be pricey, but any chances prices could go down?

Also, Airbnb. It pops up every time I look for places to stay. But I'm not sure about it. Anyone used it before? Some of the places look pretty good and cheap. Though I've only been looking at the ones with reviews. Would you risk a place with no reviews?

Feel free to add questions or advice. It's my first time traveling alone. Anyone else done it?

"Realistic" means "makes me feel good about myself and/or the world around me"

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
This springs from an ongoing discussion/beef that I've had.

People say that they want fiction and characters to be "realistic." But, in practice, it's the larger-than-life characters and the larger-than-life stories that gain traction.

The kid whose father is dead, and whose mother is in jail, and who is acting out as a result? He's a brat. The orphan who's been abused his entire life, who's being hunted by a madman, who has witnessed the murder of a classmate? He's whiny and mean. The woman who's been abandoned, multiple times, and who has had to eke out an existence on the margins of society? She's a bitch. Or, more charitably, she's boring.

But the boy with amazing powers who is only ever "mean" to the "bad" people; whose name is spelled in a Super Special way; whose mishaps are always due to the interference of others; whose primary flaw is that the fantasy equivalent of "jocks" feel threatened by him... He is the pinnacle. The book series featuring him is really, really realistic (because he pines for a girl, you see, and his parents died, so he's sad and stuff. Also he has a gift for the guitar. You've picked up the guitar recently, haven't you? You could totally be like him). Your friends and coworkers will hear about it. It will be recommended to them. It might even be positioned as the series that will "get them into fantasy."

Unless the series they get sold is 'A Song of Ice and Fire,' in which case:

"There would only be white people in this fantasy country because Europe, therefore realism," and "of course the women get raped, because women in the real world get raped, so yeah. If there wasn't rape I wouldn't buy it, despite the magic and dragons."

All of it, all of it, reinforces everything that the reader/viewer already knew, felt, and was comfortable with. If you take them to a place where they feel uncomfortable, then they reject it, and one of the defenses they use is, "it wasn't realistic."

But.

They also want to escape, so if you take them to a place that feels too much like what they're already experiencing, then they reject it, and...fall back on the same defense: "it wasn't realistic."

What this all comes down to is that the vast majority of people are too stupid to be able to get anything meaningful out of fiction, which I recognize is super condescending.

Hey man chill, you ain't gonna be liked

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
By most folks I mean.

They ain't gonna like what you put out. They ain't gonna like your style. They ain't gonna like the way you look.

That's okay. That's so okay because you're you, you hear?

Just keep on.

Don't change. It hurts and all but don't change.

book club - planning and general discussion

[personal profile] diet_poison 2017-03-14 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
So a few people have brought up concerns lately that I partly or largely share and I wanted to talk about a couple of things.

1. How do you guys feel about the current voting system? Are you ok with "strategic voting", one person/one vote, etc? Would you rather have "checkbox" voting (allowed to vote for more than one book)? Blind voting? Something else?

2. Does anyone have any ideas on ways to prevent cheating on polls while still allowing anons to participate? I'm kind of at a loss there tbh. But I have suspected for a while that the polls are being loaded by people multi-voting from different machines or using IP address shenanigans.

3. What suggestions do you guys have for fostering more discussion? It seems no matter when I hold discussion, we have at most four participants, which kind of defeats the purpose of holding book club in the first place. I kinda want to try doing it on a weekday again, but I'm not sure that will be better. I can do Sundays, but given that I have a preference for weekdays, I only want to continue to do Sundays then if they will generate more discussion than weekdays. (Sundays are generally family days for me.) I have also posted questions in the past that got some, but not much, response. What incentives will get people to discuss? If you frequently rec, vote, and participate in planning discussions, but not book discussions, what can be done to make that more appealing to you?

On a related note, I want to figure out when to discuss for March. Please respond only if you sincerely plan on participating in March's discussion - what date(s) and/or day(s) of the week are best for you this month? I'm afraid I really have to veto Saturdays, but I'm open to any other day if it'll get a lot of turnout!

1) I don't think any change in voting method is going to make a substantial difference to any actual outcome, and it'd probably be a lot of effort to change it, so I wouldn't worry about it. I'd like checkbox more, both because I wouldn't worry about what book is going to win which would be nice, and it'd have less strategic voting and also because I just think checkbox polls are generally better than one person one vote, but it's really not a huge difference either way. I don't consider blind voting that important so I'm not worried about that either.

2) I have no expertise or advice or opinion to offer on this topic

3) I think it's tough to get discussion. I think you're actually doing an amazing job, honestly, way better than I would have imagined anyone doing - it's definitely nothing that's your fault. It's just a difficult situation. Like, you have a set population that's interested in reading whatever book gets picked to start with, and then the random happenstance of time and being busy and everything wears that down, it's just difficult. There's not much that moves the needle. Maybe doing it on a weekday would help, I have no idea. I'm definitely going to be here to discuss Nightwatch though I'm committing to that

I don't know if this would work but maybe instead of a single day we could talk about that month's book any time during the month as we're reading it? Or maybe designate a week of open discussions?

I often forget much of what I would share by the time the discussion post goes up. But if I delay reading the book, stuff comes up and I don't finish in time. That's for months I plan to participate; I've skipped more than not because I only read the books that seem interesting to me.

I've also been a little shy posting sometimes because what I wanted to say was already said by you or someone else and I either reply to that or just kind of silently agree to myself, depending on my level of involvement with that particular book.

But the timing is the biggest issue. Weekday posts go up hours after I'm bed most nights. Weekend posts go up earlier but still late enough on a Sunday that between family stuff and readying for the week, I either have to sacrifice sleep to really participate or check in during my first coffee, long after everyone is gone.

But I read at night and every month I've read the chosen book, I've been up reading late at least once and burning to share something about it, usually late enough that the new post is up. By the time the designated post comes around, I don't feel as strongly about it and chances are I don't remember the book very well because I don't have a great memory for media and I read daily. I've tried taking notes but then I'm back to the issue of someone else having already pointed that same thing out.

I don't know the solution. But I enjoy reading the books, so it isn't a huge deal, I just hate that I'm not really participating most months even when I read the book. I feel guilty, like I'm stealing from the group or something.

There is definitely a problem with the voting, though. And again, I don't know how to prevent the ballot stuffing. I thought it wasn't a big deal but having read the threads this last week or so, clearly it is. Maybe a poll that requires a verified email address? I know that might put some people off from voting but I'm not sure if it would be a lot of genuine book club supporters. I think it would help keep most people from voting dozens of times, but anyone exceptionally dedicated to a certain book winning the poll could still make it happen.

I think the voting system is fine as is. We are always going to get more people voting than are going to contribute, that is just the way it is.

To be honest I think we are at maximum participation for this community. We get about the same number of people contributing as do in the non juggernaut-fandom threads. That is about it. As club organizer though, we do look to you for starting off the thread discussion.

I do my best to contribute to the discussions, but I can't always manage it. I do better on the weekend posts though. I know that by the time I would be able to get online during the week it would be 12+ hours later and guaranteed to not be part of the active discussion so I almost certainly would bail.

I'm just hear to tell you that you're doing an amazing job.

My biggest complaint and I'm not sure how to fix it is that we get so many people voting for a book, yet so few actually read or turn up. I vote once or some months not at all, so there's no way it's me and even still, votes are being stacked and yet I feel like it's mostly you participating without fostering discussion.

Would it be better to create a specific time and maybe do a live chat one day and then post on here for 2-3 other days?

I love your comments and I think they're good for fostering discussion, have you thought of perhaps posting the exact same comment on multiple days (say you write it ahead of time and then post in Sunday/Monday/Tuesday?)
