What new thing are you fannish about?

I'm *trying* to be fannish about Logan, but it's hard when the only non-ship fic I've found so far literally had Logan tell Laura to give Charles "a hug or something" to prevent a seizure.

Post the birthdays of your favorite characters or celebrities and see who can guess who you're talking about, or what fandom it is. You can use real people or fictional characters.

Doctor/medical anxiety

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
FS, I need to see a doctor about an issue (I have a bump on my arm that needs looking at), but I am TERRIFIED of going. I've been like this for years, and the last time I saw a doctor was ten years ago and things were fine. But my anxiety is worse now and my blood pressure goes through the roof, I get a cold sweat, it sucks so bad! Do you have similar anxiety? How on Earth do you get over it? I can't just keep putting it off.

Explanation for a Badfic?

[personal profile] were_lemur 2017-03-16 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
In the "Dear Badfic Author" thread a few days ago, I mentioned one where the author thought that anuses had hymens.

Today, watching Supernatural, and there's a scene where Dean refers to himself as having been "re-hymenated."

The fic was Wincest. Maybe the author saw that episode, and took Dean literally? (Although I'm pretty sure that Sam was the one with the butt-hymen.)

book club - planning and general discussion

[personal profile] diet_poison 2017-03-15 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks to everyone who responded to my thread yesterday! You've given me some good insight and ideas. I'll talk about everything that's been said once these threads are done. I'll post again maybe later this week and definitely try to do at least one day this weekend for those folks who are more likely to check then (but remember if you respond to this it doesn't matter when you do it, I will see it!)

I'll just copy yesterday's comment verbatim since it's still the same set of questions...

--

So a few people have brought up concerns lately that I partly or largely share and I wanted to talk about a couple of things.

1. How do you guys feel about the current voting system? Are you ok with "strategic voting", one person/one vote, etc? Would you rather have "checkbox" voting (allowed to vote for more than one book)? Blind voting? Something else?

2. Does anyone have any ideas on ways to prevent cheating on polls while still allowing anons to participate? I'm kind of at a loss there tbh. But I have suspected for a while that the polls are being loaded by people multi-voting from different machines or using IP address shenanigans.

3. What suggestions do you guys have for fostering more discussion? It seems no matter when I hold discussion, we have at most four participants, which kind of defeats the purpose of holding book club in the first place. I kinda want to try doing it on a weekday again, but I'm not sure that will be better. I can do Sundays, but given that I have a preference for weekdays, I only want to continue to do Sundays then if they will generate more discussion than weekdays. (Sundays are generally family days for me.) I have also posted questions in the past that got some, but not much, response. What incentives will get people to discuss? If you frequently rec, vote, and participate in planning discussions, but not book discussions, what can be done to make that more appealing to you?

On a related note, I want to figure out when to discuss for March. Please respond only if you sincerely plan on participating in March's discussion - what date(s) and/or day(s) of the week are best for you this month? I'm afraid I really have to veto Saturdays, but I'm open to any other day if it'll get a lot of turnout!

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Would anyone be interested in spreading the discussion out over a couple of days? You'd probably pick up some stragglers, and it would give people more opportunity to expand on other people's comments.

Re: book club - planning and general discussion

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I would rather have one person one vote. I do not think there is any great incidence of dicking with the polls (the month we did Graceling springs to mind most obviously). Sure a couple of people might do it, but those people always will. I think it is far more likely that we've just been seeing lurker/participant ratio. So I think we're pretty much okay on that right now. In fact, knowing how depressingly assholish people can be, I think trying to switch it up is more likely to provoke trolls into rigging it, because people are horrible.

Unless it is a mega juggernaut fandom like Harry Potter then I think probably up to about half a dozen sounds about right. Many of the actual secrets on the main page don't get that these days. I would be most interested in weekend posts, I'm really only on this week during the week because of the daylight savings time mismatch. Normally it would 12+ hours later, at least, before I would be able to comment during the week and at that point why bother? I cannot say if it would gain anyone, but I can say for certainty that it would lose me. Sorry.

Sorry that this is probably not any good news here.

re: voting: i don't know of any other places to vote, sorry. but i do like the idea of checklist voting. sometimes deciding is hard because there are multiple books on the list that i would be really curious about, and it might boost some dark horse's chances.

re: times for a discussion: honestly, the thing that gets me is that i often miss out on discussions just because the times the posts go up are really inconveniently late for me (yep, european). sure, i could come in late the next morning/around midday, but how many people are going to still check up on the post twelve hours later? on the other hand, expecting you to hold discussions on multiple days also doesn't seem fair – you're putting so much time and effort into this as is (and if i have to get up at 6 o'clock on multiple days, i'd be fucked regardless). so i guess my biggest issue is that i flat-out miss discussions due to the limited times the post sees activity, but i am unsure of how to even begin solving that without altering the actual schedule of fandomsecrets itself, lmao.

First of all, thanks for organising this over the last months! :) Especially because you actually read all the books, even those you're not interested in - unlike the rest of us.

1. I don't really see how it would change the result of the poll, BUT I admit I'm curious about the checkbox voting. So maybe we could simply try that once and then see how everyone feels about it? If it's easy to switch from one method to the other on the polling site, that is.

2. I think it's impossible to prevent cheating/multiple votes. However, I agree with you on the point that it's happening. And yes, I've read the lurkers vs. actual participants argument and agree to some extent. Nevertheless, I find it hard to believe that there are 100-200 individual people lurking the book club thread - on FS as a whole, yeah maybe, but not the book club. I think it's much more likely that we have one or maybe a few voting trolls, just like we have troll book noms now and then.

3. I'm one of those European FS weekenders, I don't really look at FS during the week. So I'd personally prefer to keep the discussions on Sundays. However, I think we should definitely have the discussions on the day the majority of people who actually read the book and want to discuss it for that particular month prefer. Even if that kinda excludes me and some others from the active discussions. Posting mostly into the void on the following day simply isn't the same as actively engaging. And since you are the one who puts the most work into it, and you'd prefer weekdays, then go for it. Because, while I don't think the discussions will magically explode during the week, I also don't think they will be significantly smaller.

Personally, I actually think we're doing pretty well with the discussions. I had a lot of fun here with Maurice, Dracula, Watership Down etc. Partly due to my belief that our potential number of partipants is much smaller than other people here seem to assume. Of course, nominating and voting gets more people, because that's easy and quick and doesn't require any kind of work or commitment. Actually reading something longer than 20 pages, maybe something you didn't vote for, is a deterrent which will make us lose a number of people on the way.

It's not something you're doing or not doing that makes the discussions more or less active than we assume they could be, it's a simple question of numbers. Because we have a small pool of potential participants in the first place, and we will lose at least 75% on the way from nomination to discussion day - just like other online book clubs. Places like goodreads only have the advantage of higher initial numbers and (usually) permanently open discussion threads.
