I'm pretty sick of the default assumption that everyone on the internet is white. Like I GET it, lots of people are, most places are generally about America and stuff, but would it hurt people to maybe consider that they aren't actually always the centre of the world?

I've been accused of being anti-Japan in fandom for being critical of its media and tone-deaf stories and characters. But you know what, I do the same for Chinese, Korean, and all the rest of our media, too. There is a lot of cultural tension and politically/historically offensive shit here that Westerners don't pick up on, and mostly I ignore those comments since the people making them have no idea how much they don't know.

But then people call me racist or anti-ASIAN and it's like, hello, I am literally Asian. I was literally born in and grew up in Asia. My entirely family and extended family is Asian. I speak three languages and two of them are Asian ones.

If I had a US dollar for every time a random white person from the US stopped in to try to defend THOSE POOR ASIANS from... me, an Asian person, from talking about policies and practices and cultural stuff that basically directly affects my life, I'd be fucking rich.

But... you're assuming they're white and from the US when maybe they're not? If they don't know you're Asian, how is it that you know what they are?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Devil's Advocate, but OP doesn't say they assumed. Lots of people have their location listed in various forms of online profiles or have comment histories on social media sites that state where they're from.

I don't know that OP is doing this (maybe they're talking about cases where they actually know the other person is white), but this always amuses me when I do see it happening: someone accusing another person of assuming everyone is white/straight/etc while making that same assumption about the person they're accusing.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming this is about tumblr or something where tons of people have a selfie and bio blurb which usually includes location, et cetera.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao mte. I AM THE ONLY SOLITARY ASIAN AGAINST A SEA OF AMERICAN WHITE PEOPLE

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I would hazard a guess that it's come up in the discourse. It's pretty easy to spot the young white americans arguing their SJW ideals when really they have no idea what they're talking about.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Ya burnt, OP

how does it feel

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, have you been to tumblr? If there's a label for it, it's in the profile. If there isn't a label for it yet, someone will make one up and get a persecution complex over it.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the first step is being open about this when it crops up with accusations.

I've seen a few tumblr posts where there's an idiot that comes in with that sort of attitude and they're shut down either by people being like "ok no the op is not being racist by criticizing" or by the OP pointing out that they are part of that community.

But you do get the possibility they will accuse you of self hating.

And I know you're sick of it, but it's easier to change your interactions than everyone else's. Be stiff and fuck what other people think.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I like how you're apparently just some sort of catch-all "Asian" like that excuses you from inter-Asian racism lmao. Look, if you're Chinese and you're going on anti-Japanese tirades, people have eeeevery fuckin right to call you on it. Same in reverse, or any other cross-cultural nonsense you're throwing out there.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You seem like someone who knows absolutely nothing about Asian history and why there is tension between the countries. (Hint: genocide and sexual slavery).

(Anonymous) 2017-03-15 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I think if anything AYRT's point would work a lot better if you flipped the ethnicities there

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I guess I can be anti-Muslim then and it's okay, Muslims have committed several terrorist attacks in my country so I guess I'm justified on my hate and prejudice.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Muslims aren't a distinct country that invaded yours, though. That's not a good comparison.

If Saudi Arabia officially, as a nation, invaded your country and genocided its people, you'd probably be justified in hating the country. Japan kinda did that to a lot of Asia.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Muslims aren't a distinct country that invaded yours"

Country or not, they are invading mine and the rest of Europe.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
That's not analogous to what Japan did in WWII for example, though, so the point is moot.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, how dare those muslims take time away from your antisemitism and gypsy hating ways. Fuck you, Euro-trash

Belarusians were treated pretty bad in WW2, lots of people of all ages died, brute nazi 'police' detachments ie groups of executioners had no problem killing children and women, they viewed them as subhumans, they also raped a lot and shot peaceful civilians if they were drunk, having said this Belarus during the course of occupation was like the city of Nanking, unlike the city the murders, theft and atrocities dragged on for many months, and after all that they don't hate or have a grudge against the German people, against Nazis sure, but not current Germany.

I also know people from the Baltic states suffered horrendously from the bolsheviks (forced relocation to gulags for example) and they tried to exterminate Latvian culture by importing masses of Russians here and sending Latvians to Siberia yet no no grudges are held.

Having suffered so much Europeans don't whine, don't hold grudges. The people who hurt their ancestors are long gone, why the hate. Asians can't say the same. In Taiwan for example there's still people demanding an apology from Japan regarding "regarding comfort" women but eastern Europeans having suffered a million times worse demand no apology from the Germans for the actions of the Nazis.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
The Germans have officially acknowledged and apologized over and over though. Japan hasn't. There's a difference.

Aah, bad example on my part, my bad. I'm South Korean myself, and I'm just pissed off at all the continued in-fighting, especially based in something as stupid as consumable media, so I get annoyed when people just claim "Asian" like it's fine to spit hatred all over groups you don't belong to. I wasn't referencing anything direct.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ignorance detected.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Inter-Asian racism definitely exists but it's so entwined with inter-Asian political historical and political disputes that its hard to claim pure 'racism' for things like op is talking about, like criticizing Japanese media. Plenty of non-Japanese Asian people have problems with what they do and especially how they portray themselves vs. other Asian ethnicities also. It sounds like op is complaining about Americans assuming they are anti Japanese PEOPLE i.e. 'racist' when they're anti Japanese politics in reference to 'politically/historically offensive shit' they mention

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
^ or anti Asian people because if you criticize Japanese media you must be racist against 'Asians' because as far as they know, Asia doesn't have its own internal political disputes.
