I'm so confused on how anime and manga are different "genres". Mediums, sure, and if you're not into watching cartoons, you're not into watching cartoons. But not only are the stories often identical, they basically follow the same tropes and conventions. I am skeptical that one could love manga but hate all anime ever.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP but as someone who prefers manga to anime I can see that. OP mentions certain things anime does have that manga doesn't. Pacing and sound. In manga you choose how fast you read or skim much more easily than having anime drag it out for drama, for example.

I was thinking that. Also, because you're reading at your own speed, there're certain things you can gloss over in manga. Like, I can tolerate incidental fanservice WAY better in manga than in anime, because the boobs are not actually jiggling at my face, and I can skim past the frames I'm uninterested in.
I can also see how if the dubbing conventions bug them, that would also not be easily solvable.

I mean, I guess, but as far as pacing, that's really going to depend on the series. I've definitely seen shows that are panel for panel the same as the manga, though it's true some have to be reworked slightly to fit in the 25-minute episode format plus mid-episode commercial break.

I can't comment on sound. Does OP not like any movies at all? Or is it just anime? And if so, what in the world makes anime different? I grant that an annoying voice actor can ruin enjoyment, but still, it just feels a little baffling to talk about all anime like that.

Not saying OP needs to like anime or anything, just genuinely confused on how one can love manga but be so vehemently opposed to anime.

Yeah, I came here to say this. And they even say they'll read the manga version of an anime? I know some manga are really different from their anime (usually when the manga comes first, less often so when the manga's based on the anime), but most of them aren't that different.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK, if someone made realistic comic versions of MCU, that would not be the same experience as watching the movies, even if the story and characters were all the same.

I would find it very weird if someone were to claim they're so similar as to be no significant difference.

I think it's just a misuse of the word "genre" and OP meant "medium" or "form of art/entertainment."

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Why the hell is the anime genre?

Form. Medium.

Not genre. Naruto has the same tropes and the same content on screen as it does on page.

That said, I also prefer manga if I have the choice, but that's usually because of the time I can invest in it.

I used to prefer manga by far, but then life started happening and I just don't have time to sit and read manga much - but I can watch episodes of anime while I eat lunch. So I still watch anime, but don't read manga so much :/

Naruto is a great choice for this secret. Because they put SO MUCH FUCKING FILLER in the show and I just...UGH. Gimme the train wreck of a manga any day. That and I don't have to hear Naruto's horrible dub and sub voices.

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
1 - I meant medium, not genre. My bad.

2 - I don't think anime sucks and never once said so. I don't enjoy it.

3 - I would like to add that I don't give a shit if someone hates video games. It's the hypocrisy of calling someone closed-minded for not enjoying anime then declaring all of another medium worthless that pisses me off.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of people will either love or hate a whole medium, but some people just aren't very self-aware about this and there's no arguing with them when it happens. They assume that the medium is either objectively good/bad and that people who like even one thing from that medium must love everything from it as much as they do.

What do you mean by format? Is it because most anime is TV shows? Because that's half the reason why I don't watch anime -- because I don't watch television and I don't like the format. If I'm going to watch an anime, it's going to be a movie, like Akira.

(My one exception is NGE, but even that I haven't seen since the Bush years.)

FWIW I agree with you on anime tropes, especially these days, whoof. It's why I tend to avoid games that are overly anime-esque in their artwork, too.

OP - what tropes do you dislike? Curious as while manga is less ridden with them, some are annoying me now as well. Was kidney stoned to death so read a lot and wanted to find nice psychological horrors or scifi. This is where I hit a brick wall - Asano Inio was the only one breaking out of conventions. Suspensful dystopian stuff usually gets mecha and this is one genre I hate. I also ran out of Junji Ito.

You mentioned fake gay stuff and that also drives me insane - would love a plotted horror or scifi with gay characters and found three - the one with cursed family where few can time travel in dreams, No. 6 manga adaptation and Killing Stalking. Would even love ordinary love stories that are realistic and without tropes. Once tried to find gay and disabled characters and failed.

Alas - I think you can fancy any medium or not and others mentioned various differences but I think that anime is more ... market mainstream so studios think of merch, profit and target audiences more. The only one I really hated anime version of was Death Note - the pacing was horrid.

I don't enjoy anime and always assumed I'd dislike manga as well. Maybe I should try it...

I tend to not have patience for anime or manga anymore-- though I did have someone ask me why I liked manga and then said that by that very definition I should like Western comics as well.

Granted they are vastly different genres.

I just shrugged because there is no use giving those type of people answers-- to each their own, I say.
