tbh, you can also be like me and ignore the films (where the relationship is resolved), and stick to the anime, where iirc they didn't actually solve the love triangle one way or another.

I do personally think that he fit Sheryl better than Ranka, but I did appreciate that the show actually showed us why Ranka was an option, and it remains one of the few love triangles I didn't hate.
But yeah, I didn't like the films. Deleted 'em from my memory.

Nope, in the anime Alto and Sheryl had sex and he was going to confess to her but she stopped him with a kiss. And just in case someone didn't get the memo, director confirmed that Sheryl/Alto ARE the couple. Ranka moves on and marries someone else.

Huh. I guess that it seemed more ambiguous to me. In the sense that he could have STILL slept with Sheryl and then gone on to be with Ranka. Adults do stuff like that.
