I generally respond, especially if the person asked a question. Sometimes this starts a discussion, and then it's like the old days on LJ when you could have a discussion with readers.

I don't feel bad about this at all.

(Also: comment replies aren't artificial inflation, imo: to me when an author replies to every comment that's ever been left with announcements of each new chapter ... "Hey! I've posted chapter 2!" "Hey, I've posted chapter 3!" "Hey! I've posted chapter 4!") .. now, THAT's comment inflation.)
