Then they don't trust their own taste, which is up to them, I guess, but shouldn't trouble you.

There are a lot of reasons why a kudos/comment count might shoot up - quality, yes, but also a popular kink, or a rec, or a fixit for something that annoys a lot of people, or one or two people having a conversation in the tags - and sometimes a *really good* story is a bit niche so doesn't get a lot of readers.

My point is, try not to fret about these things.

If you're in a new fandom or trying out a new pairing, kudos/comments is pretty much the only indicator when you're browsing AO3.

Or you could... read the summary and think 'Hey, that looks kinda interesting' and try the first chapter. And then think either, 'Well that sucked,' or 'Cool! I'll keep going!'

Five minutes of your time is a large investment I know, but risk is the spice of life!

(There's also looking at the bookmarks when you've found something you like. That's worked well for me in the past.)
