That's how I feel about Leonard Cohen, Phil Collins and others I can't remember off the top of my head.

Same. And I think they're all good songwriters so their success doesn't baffle me, but...the voices are not the draw.

Tom Waits?

Bob Dylan

IA, OP. I think he sings without opening his mouth to get that nasal effect.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-20 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, one, taste is taste and it'd be a funny old world if we were all the same and etc etc etc

Two, he's very charismatic and an excellent songwriter and those things matter a lot more than technical virtuosity to many people.

Tom Waits?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-21 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
The point of Tom Waits is his insane voice though.

Different strokes.

Besides, if voice is all you're listening to in a musician, I think you're missing out on some amazing talent in general.

God. Yes. He is awful. The day I moved out of my mom's house when I went to college was the best fucking day of my life because she fucking loves this whiny voiced hack and I knew I would never have to hear it again.

That said, cinnamon girl is surprisingly decent.

I mean, his voice isn't the best, but lol @ anyone seriously thinking Neil Young is a hack.

A southern man don't need him around, anyhow.

Tastes differ.

When I heard Bob Dylan, I thought, "People like this? Seriously?" And, yes, some people do.

I always feel really terrible when there is a musical artist who seems like a really nice person, but their voice just grates on me, so I can't listen to their music.

Bob Dylan was the person who sprung to mind for me - great songwriter, but I just. Hate. His. Voice.

Fortunately for me, a lot of his songs have been covered...

I also have issues with Leonard Cohen's unfortunate 1980s thing for cheap synthesisers, but I do like his voice - though he's another singer people have strong opinions on - so I over look it as best I can.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-21 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, yes. Him and Tom Petty.

I will say, however, that one of my favorite songs is one of his, just not when he sings it.

Bob Dylan is worse, imo. But I get what you mean. I don't understand either.
