To be honest, I was surprised by the casting in this movie because the actors chosen for Force Awakens was so good! Felicity Jones seemed really sort of underwhelming in comparison.

She was! And i've seen her in one other movie and she does a good job there but...it's a boring character, told to be boring by a director and actor's interpretation.

I remember reading so many articles like "Oh it's great that we have a female lead who doesn't have to smile!"

A) I don't remember Rey...or Leia...or even to an extent Padme smiling all that much.

B) Not smiling doesn't equal no emotion whatsoever.

I really disliked this movie.

Exactly this. I don't have an issue with not smiling - goodness knows this character didn't have much to be happy about! But the actress was pretty wooden except for a few scenes. That scene where she sees her father's hologram message looks like she's sucking lemons.

Padme is pretty fucking smiley.

Leia is more of a smirker, I think.

Felicity Jones has zero charm or personality in everything she does. Even in interviews, there's nothing there. Blander than bland.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-11 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say her acting pinged good or bad to me but I definitely didn't connect with her character. Her accent/voice really bothered me though.

I get they wanted people to keep their accents but ... no, that didn't work for Jyn.

I wasn't crazy about her either, but Whitaker was the worst part.

"Feisty white brunettes"?

So, what should they cast, glum redheaded mixed-raced girls?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-11 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You're absolutely right. They clearly had NO CHOICE but to cast feisty brunettes for all three major roles. There just weren't ANY alternatives! It was the only viable option and anyone who thinks differently is a no goodnik sjw who should go back to tumblr!

I liked this movie a lot, but I agree she was the weakest part. Never understood why anyone liked her at all because she just bored me.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-12 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, she was incredibly dull. I've never seen her in anything else, so I don't know if she's a bad actor or if Jyn was just a bad character, but I don't really care. Everything about her was boring.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-12 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
She was pretty forgettable to me.

[personal profile] otakugal15 2017-05-12 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
...yeah no. You just have crap taste.

She wasn't the strongest actor in the film, no, but I WAS able to connect to her and I found her fine. I just think people here ave some...slight snobbish-ness and need to let loose more.

Besides SW has NEVER had SUPER amazing acting over all. Some are better than others, but these aren't like Oscar bait films, mmkay.

As someone who's not a SW fan, I watched the Force Awakens to give the new trilogy a try. I REALLY REALLY liked it.

Then I watched Rogue One (mostly for Mads) and it was so... underwhelming. Like, really really boring.

I agree, except I don't think the others really can act. Daisy Ridley just does a scrunchy face to convey emotions. Such acting, wow.

She wasn't great, but it was mostly that she was written poorly. Acting can only fix so much, OP. She was like a chess piece being moved through the movie by other people, and we never really got to see what she herself was like, IMO. I mean we saw lots of trauma and desperate decisions...but she was just swept along by the plot with little actual agency of her own. I was disappointed.

But I don't think that's the worst part of the movie, not for me anyway.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-12 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
*shrug*

I like feisty brunettes just fine, thank you.

To be fair, it wasn't a great role. A main role, yes, but not a great one. Jyn was just sort of... there. Like another user said upthread, she seemed more like a pawn who just got swept along rather than a character who takes an active part in the story. The actress' lack of expression didn't help, but I think the writing was most at fault here.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-12 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the movie, liked the character, and thought FJ did a good job with the role. She and a couple of the other characters in Rogue One felt a lot more like real people to me than any other characters in the SW franchise and I loved that about them and about the movie in general.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-12 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I just kind of hated that they keep pushing Strong Female Leads, but Jyn spent the entire movie revolving around men. Why was she important? Not because she had any useful skills but because she knew Saw and Galen. She was fixated on her father, her mother only existed to get shot in front of Galen and was then never mentioned again.

She has no character development, but she's an inspiration to Cassian to make him less of a douche and to make him feel bad about murdering people if he knows they have loved ones and to give him a chance to redeem himself. She gives Saw a chance to redeem himself from his past douche behavior. She redeems her father by letting the Rebellion know he wasn't a loyal Imperial. She inspires people to be better like a Reach For The Stars motivational poster in an office. She's a manic pixie dream girl without any of the manic.

There's nothing about her that doesn't revolve around giving a male character more depth. Now granted, Baze and Chirrut and K2SO were just as flat development-wise, but they gave them interesting quirks and banter to make up for it. Jyn had to be a Strong Female Character instead.
