I remember reading so many articles like "Oh it's great that we have a female lead who doesn't have to smile!"

A) I don't remember Rey...or Leia...or even to an extent Padme smiling all that much.

B) Not smiling doesn't equal no emotion whatsoever.

I really disliked this movie.

Exactly this. I don't have an issue with not smiling - goodness knows this character didn't have much to be happy about! But the actress was pretty wooden except for a few scenes. That scene where she sees her father's hologram message looks like she's sucking lemons.

Interesting. That scene (and her reaction) seemed on point to me. But I was really emotional when I saw Rogue One because it was my first Christmas without my dad. The trying-not-to-show-emotion thing felt real to me because that had been the bulk of my year.

That said, I did find her to be the Katniss Everdeen of Star Wars -- in that things happened to her and she reacted. She didn't make things happen.

Padme is pretty fucking smiley.

Leia is more of a smirker, I think.

Padme was a politician, though. It makes sense that she learned to smile a lot.

Padme smiles at the man she loves one movie out of a trilogy and she's "pretty fucking smiley"?

I mean, it's not an insult

She does smile though

As does every other character...? I mean, if you want a character defined by their smiling in the Star Wars movies, Kit Fisto is right there.
