[Fargo (the TV series)]

I don't watch Fargo, but I can really see how something like that would rapidly become cheap and gimmicky when it shows up every episode.

Is the series episodic? They may be between a rock and a hard place, to some extent, since viewers who just tune in wouldn't have seen that message, so they wouldn't have it at all... so you're left with either part of the audience missing it, or oversaturation.

Not the OP, but the series definitely isn't episodic.

In that case, yeah, the decision is very questionable. If you're expecting people to follow week-to-week, you definitely don't need to reiterate that every time.

I'm just bummed about the season 3 ending, tbh. When it came on I exclaimed WHAT!? out loud. Disappointed.

How did it end?

It was left up to the viewer, basically. Spoilers....

....

....

The villain is in police custody and says that he'll be out in five minutes. There's a tension-building shot of the door of the holding cell and a clock, then...end credits.

A little more than that: the villain is finally apprehended after you thought he'd escaped, and the heroine has him in an interrogation room. She tells him that any minute now, several agents are going to come through the door and take him away. The villain, on the other hand, says that he's got such influence (even in a government sgency) that someone above her in status will walk through the door and he'll be set free.

They're both dead certain their own scenario will happen, the camera cuts to the ticking clock and... it ends.

Yes. DISAPPOINTING.

i wasn't in love when i first saw it, (because boy oh boy other open ended things have pissed me off in the past) but the longer i left it the more it stuck in my head.

now though i... actually really dig it? it feels like it fits the narrative rather than being a straight up cop out, and the whole "truth is relative" or whatever theme is set up from that first scene, so idk, a final clash of that before we cut works for me.

and honestly i'm all for Gloria's version. Riker's and snickers bars.

Season 3 was a pile of dreck. It was just disgusting on every level, and had nothing of the humor of seasons 1 and 2. It only helped to drive home what a terrible actor Ewan McGregor is. Woo, look at me, I can do terrible accents and make big eyes, woohoo!

Oh god, he's not doing an accent in this is he? Why doesn't someone tell him to stop?!

I just consider it an extension of the opening credits, like "the truth is out there" for the X-Files.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
i mean, this season they started playing with that, right? Like if I'm remembering correctly they have the word true fade out first, turning it into "this is a story", then just, "story"

SO EH, artistically i don't mind it, but i can see it grating on some folks, sure

(Anonymous) 2017-07-12 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's my understanding that the phrase is repeated on purpose not so much as an homage to the move but as a statement about the nature of both the film and the show. It's not stating that it's factually based or even kidding about being factually based anymore, but really using "true" as a modifier, so as a poetic way of saying that it's very made-up (as in, this is very much a story).
