"A really good actor"... O_O Different strokes, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-08 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a fair point, he's good at acting in action movies is more what I mean

I see your point, but generally action movies aren't terribly demanding in terms of acting range.

It's a totally different set of skills. And, like. I think it's easier to be a mediocre actor in action movies than in dramas. But being really good at acting in action movies is actually pretty difficult and a real and meaningful skill. And Mel Gibson is real good at it.

Like. The fact that action movie acting is different than classical dramatic acting doesn't make it useless. Just different.

I didn't say it was useless though, did I? Action movie skills are a thing, but in terms of requiring actual acting ability let's face it, that part is a lot more flexible than playing King Lear in the West End. It's like saying, "Bob is a really good swimmer". If you qualify that with "at his local YMCA", that doesn't mean he's useless... but it means something very different than "in the Olympics".

No but that's what I disagree with

Like, that idea presumes that there's a basically linear relationship where the skills required by action movies are basically the same as the skills required for serious dramatic acting, only less so. What I believe is that they're different skills. They're different kinds of acting, different disciplines. It's not like dramatic acting is a "truer" or more authentic form of acting.

To adopt your metaphor: I would say that it's more like the difference between the breast stroke and the butterfly. They're different things but they're still both swimming. One's not a shittier version of another. Or, like, shot put and javelin, or something like that.

He is, though, as long as he's cast correctly. Does he have massive range? No. But what he does, he does extremely well.
