Though by the end of S1 Steve actually stopped being a one-note dick and started acting like a decent human being.

That's an aspect in which it's similar to HP, because James Potter does the exact same thing as Steve in terms of becoming a decent human being. What makes it different from HP is that Jonathan also matures and improves as a person, and Snape doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT
Ah, that's true about Jonathan.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Improved enough that Harry named his son after him.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry is way too forgiving. Doesn't mean Snape is less of a fucking creep.

I mean... Harry also gave fucking Voldemort an opportunity to repent... so...

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
So, basically, what you're saying is Harry's a better person than you.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but like... Harry's forgiveness doesn't erase the moral problems of what Snape did. That's not even an argument about Harry Potter. It's just not how forgiveness works. Harry's forgiveness is something personal that he offers to Snape, not a redemption for all time of everything Snape did.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Snape repeatedly risking his life and ultimately giving it up to save the wizarding world from Voldemort more than redeems any past action he may have committed. Heck Darth Vader only repented at the very last second to save his son after causing far more death and destruction than Snape ever did and that was enough to make him a blue force ghost.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Blue goddamn force ghosts are something the people who made Star Wars came up with, not a meaningful marker of actual fucking moral redemption

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry forgave Snape because he realize Snape was looking out for him his whole life and ultimately gave up his life to save him and everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-10 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Harry forgiving Snape =/= Snape deserving that forgiveness, though. Harry forgave a lot of people who were objectively pieces of shit.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-10 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
How many died to save him?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-10 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Dumbledore, for one.

But an act of heroism doesn't make someone not an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-10 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Dumbledore didn't die for Harry. He was already going to die regardless.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
There's not a whole lot to indicate James actually improved beyond the words of people who were already biased towards him and deliberately omitted that he was a bully who sexually assaulted Snape and threatened to hex Lily if she didn't go out without him.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact Lily married him despite openly calling people on their bullshit is more than enough proof. It was toxic ass Snape who she cut out of her life despite being best friends. If James were so bad then she would have cut him out of her life just as easily.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Sirius all but admitted that he pretended to change for her but bullied Snape when she wasn't looking soooo...

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Where did this happen?

To be clear, I am actually asking for what quote you're thinking of because I can't remember it

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
“Once James had deflated his head a bit,” said Sirius.

“And stopped hexing people just for the fun of it,” said Lupin.

“Even Snape?” said Harry.

“Well,” said Lupin slowly, “Snape was a special case. I mean, he never lost an opportunity to curse James, so you couldn’t really expect James to take that lying down, could you?”

“And my mum was okay with that?”

“She didn’t know too much about it, to tell you the truth,” said Sirius. “I mean, James didn’t take Snape on dates with her and jinx him in front of her, did he?”

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Would you say that it was bullying when Snape "never lost an opportunity to curse James"?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-09 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I would. Because that is the word of one person biased towards the memory of a dead person, who acted like James sexually assaulting Snape was NBD.

We actually SAW Snape's objective memories of what happened and there was never much to indicate that Snape ever bullied James to the extent that he was.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-10 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Well, no. The behavior we're talking about comes after the behavior that is (correctly) described as bullying.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-10 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
And when did we see this?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-10 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
We saw ONE example from Snape's POV, yeah...meaning we never saw any of the bullshit Snape pulled in return. Because it's subjective.
