I have this really strange fear that I will somehow, suddenly and quite accidentally, become famous and important and I will be terribly embarrassed by my fannish life, not because I’ve had a fannish life, but because I’ve done some truly awful cosplay.

Like, suddenly I’ll be president without even meaning to be, and everyone will go online and say “Holy shit, that’s some bad cosplay!” and it will be a huge scandal and the press briefing questions will be like “No, seriously, what were you thinking with that?” and I will never live it down.

I have absolutely no ambitions in any direction that would likely put me in the kind of position where there would be that level of scrutiny, but it remains a nagging fear.

Yeah, there are some incriminating pictures out there somewhere of me as a Silent Hill nurse... My head's covered, but I totally get you.

"I know right? It was totally awful. I especially love how gross the one from 2012 is, can you imagine? What was I thinking?!"

The key to avoiding embarrassment is laughing at yourself before others have the chance to do so.

I haven't done cosplay, but I do worry about people connecting my username to my real life and stumbling across all the fandom debates and gushing over ships, characters, actors, fics,... There's probably nothing to be ashamed about, but it feels very private.

Same. And it's about equal parts worry about being embarrassed over something private and worry I'd lose my job/professional reputation over something "scandalous".

To be fair, anyone can be famous these days.

I dunno, OP, I've seen embarrassing pics of some of my favorite celebrities and it just makes me like them even more, especially if they acknowledge those pictures and can laugh at themselves. It really humanizes them and I like that.

Here's what you do, OP. You own it. You fucking own it. Think about that horribly embarrassing fanny-pack picture of The Rock. It. Is. Awesome.

He wore it again recently to sort of poke fun at himself, too. I think it was Youtube Rewind. Anyway. Awesome. Anybody who looks down on him for that is obviously an idiot, and it would be the same for you if you became famous (for something good, obvs.).

Remember your people, the nerds! Don't be afraid to laugh at yourself a little. And own your embarrassing past; people will like you MORE for it, not less. :)

Just because one person can become president on a whim doesn't mean anyone else can. You're good.

And that is why, from a young age, I've been careful about my past. But it if i became an actress, and the subject of fandom came up, I would definitely mention that I wrote a gif or two, but I love reading good quality, well characterized fic. and then drop my fandoms, so that I could reap the rewards.

also, I'd be into any fics that paired whatever character I'd be playing with my faves. Adventure, romance, whatever.

I definitely understand the "not ashamed to be a big geek, but kind of ashamed of some of the geeky things I've done" thing.

The most fame I am ever likely to achieve is on the order of a a 4-second appearance on the local news talking about how the tornado sounded like a freight train, so I'm good.

Honestly the worst cosplayer in the world would be a more respectable president than what the US has got right now so

This. So much this right now.

Ain't that the truth.
