Disagree very strongly. Aside from the fact that some of us are allergic and therefore know we can't have a 'real, genuine connection' with a thing that brings us out in hives and takes our breath away (literally) - which doesn't mean we want to hurt them as that seems to be the only alternative posed on this thread - love or hate, there is nothing to say that this is true although it is very popular with animal lovers to say presumably as it enables them to feel superior.

Anecdote: One guy I knew (co-worker) who was vegan, animal rights yay, super into animals of all kinds was the most dickish, unpleasant bully towards other people that I have ever had the misfortune to meet.

Although I imagine you will assume it was my fault as you have already judged me by your post.
