Have you ever seen John Simm in other roles? He's a really great actor! So I don't think his portrayal of the Master has improved because of an improving of his acting skills (well, maybe he also improved a bit during these years), but because of the writing.
Since the Master was no longer insane, but "cured", he was more stable and "menacing", even if he retained his silliness. I laughed way more than I expected I would've been listening to his insults.
He was way more similar to Anthony Ainley's portrayal of the master than the one we saw during Tenth's run. I wanted more!!!
