I'm not sure whether we're discussing this as a professional or fanfic trope. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of professionally written characters start from using gender-bending of existing characters as a starting point. Hell, I have an OC that started with my realizing I couldn't think of a female character who's much like Ian Malcolm. Deciding when to account for the differences in their experience and how it might affect their personality is what makes it interesting, and I like to think there aren't right or wrong answers. But the one rule 63 fic I've written involved motorsports in the 70's and I worried I'd get backlash (not that the fic was ever going to be that popular) for actually making one of the characters be more held back in her career, but I felt like it would have almost been disrespectful to the actual women who didn't get enough support to achieve more in that scene, like, on top of the fact that I'm telling a story about genderflipped guys rather than actual women.

And then there's using it to tailor your porn, which I have no issue with either.
