See, a female Indiana Jones set in modern times is something I would totally watch because that's different enough to make it new and interesting, but you're also right in that would make it into an AU rather than just a genderswap.

For me, the interest in AUs or any sort of swap is in how they differ from the original story, meaning that there has to be a fairly significant level of change to interest me. Something like Magnificent Seven fits that bill because it's set in a different time period AND in a different country. Likewise, I wouldn't be interested in something like, say, black Rapunzel, where the only change to the story is that she's black. But set it in Africa and adapt the story to incorporate African culture and mythological imagery? Heck yeah, I'd be interested in that.
