You know that thing I was talking about the other day about people not doing gay/bi men favors by shipping us. Larries are a prime example.

Fuck off.

And when you see people claiming they're doing gay/bi men a favor by shipping them, you'll be well within your rights to tell them that. I, however, will be over here shipping what I want to, because I like it, and not giving a fuck.

Given that the entire premise of Larries is that they're protesting homophobia in entertainment, will be proven right sometime next month, and at that point, we'll sing their praises for outing gay men ...

(Is this the point where I get called a misogynist for saying that outing people who are not anti-gay political wonks is usually wrong, attempting out out people who are probably not LGBTQ is ridiculous, and the entire project is driven by wishful thinking and stereotypes anyway?)

NAYRT

I agree that, to the extent that the ship is about insisting that actual gayness exists, it is inherently objectionable. But I don't think that's the entire premise of Larries at all. I think there are people who ship them because they're pretty. And the argument you're making seems pretty weird in this context, because the actual example of fandom in the secret seems to have nothing whatsoever to do with reality, and instead to be some kind of bizarre flight of fancy involving vineyards. So it comes across a little weird for you to be fighting about how awful Larries are for insisting their ship is real in the context of something that appears to have nothing whatsoever to do with that.

I mean, I don't know if I'm missing something here. But to me, it looks the secret is about an extremely elaborate fantasy about two pretty boys making wine, not the kind of conspiracy-theory RPS that you're criticizing.

I'm quite sure that a big chunk of Larrie shippers just like the idea of Harry and Louis together. The entire fandom is not comprised of tinhats. I doubt even half the fandom is comprised of tinhats. And it's a pet peeve of mine when people decide that a loud and annoying fraction of a particular fandom justifies automatically treating everyone from that fandom as suspect or problematic.

That said, tinhats are definitely annoying. And slash-shipping RPF tinhats who insist their ship is real despite everything the real people who comprise their ship say on the matter are definitely objectionable and deserve to be harshly criticized for their bullshit. No argument there.
