Review/Analysis of DS9's "Wrongs Darker than Death or Night"

(Anonymous) 2017-08-06 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
We learned what happened to Kira's father in "Ties of Blood and Water", and now it's time to learn about Kira's mother. It's not exactly a happy story; Kira definitely doesn't think so.

ahoy hoy

Happy day, lovely people. What're you all up to this weekend? Personally, I'm trying to avoid ridiculously high temperatures by camping out in my basement.

Swearing at the sewing machine. I spent nearly an hour doing thread changes, setting changes, feet changes, breaking needles, and so on before I figure out it was a minor problem. (Basically I'd done a buttonhole earlier, my machine has a quirk where sometimes if I set it to buttonhole and then switch it back to normal it stays on buttonhole stitch length and eats my fabric trying to sew normally. I have to set it back to buttonhole and then normal a few times until it takes)

I've just vegged out on the sofa and FB-stalked one Olof Mörck (guitarist of Amaranthe) after meeting him post-gig last thursday. He's cute, but holy hell is his style intimidating to this slacker.

Will be working tomorrow.

I've been having a lazy weekend. I've been catching up on Stitchers and I think I am going to rewatch Stranger Things. I've also already ate an entire package of delicious peanut butter cookies, gf glazed donut, and some cheddar popcorn.

Anime recommendations

(Anonymous) 2017-08-05 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm tired and in pain today so I need some distraction, anyone have good anime recommendations?

I don't like harem anime/anything that's too overtly gross to it's female characters and I'm not into BL either, other then that I am fairly open to a lot of genres.

Listing everything I've already seen would take too long but off the top of my head a few things I liked; Attack on Titan, Erased, Akame ga Kill, Kodomo no Omocha, Death Parade, Madoka Magica, Boku no Hero Academia and let's just end the list there.

Finally watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

(Anonymous) 2017-08-05 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Finished the first season, actually. And it's much better than the title would have you think. But is it just me, or does it have a kid's show vibe to it? Particularly Greg's character. I can't explain it at all - I mean, it's a very adult show. Including Greg. Maybe especially Greg. But something about the formula feels... kid or teen show.

Anyone else?

I'm excited about the recs I've gotten so far!

I'm going to add these, each a book that I have either very recently read or am currently reading and would love to discuss:

1. A Brother's Price by Wen Spencer: https://www.amazon.com/Brothers-Price-Wen-Spencer/dp/0451460383
An alternate reality in which the majority of people (maybe 90%? not sure of the figure) are female, boys and men are kept cloistered at home for their protection and used as bargaining chips for marriage arrangements, and a set of sisters all marry one man and bear a set of daughters for the next generation. Sort of a cross between a Western and steampunk setting-wise. The main character is a boy about to come of age and lamenting the likelihood that he'll be married off to his unsavory neighbors - and then he falls in love with a princess.

2. Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie: https://www.amazon.com/Ancillary-Justice-Imperial-Radch-Leckie/dp/031624662X
Sci-fi set thousands of years into the future in the reigning empire of humans, the Radch Empire, in which ship AIs are as complex mentally and emotionally as humans and have human "ancillary" bodies for ship maintenance and to serve as soldiers. The main character is a remnant of a ship that has disappeared, inhabiting the body of her only remaining ancillary, but passing as human, and is on a quest for revenge. Gender also plays an interesting role, or lack thereof: Radchaai people do not place any social importance on gender and all use the pronoun "she" (they do have male and female genders, but consider them unimportant).
