Born in the early 80s here, and my life has not ever been defined by pop culture, what's popular at the time, or what "all the kids are doing/wearing/watching." I was kind of sheltered and such. But yeah, the "wow life was awesome and we all lived this way" is probably always a bunch of bullshit. We're just noticing it more now because of times we actually lived through. Like, the 50s wasn't Happy Fucking Days, WWII wasn't some idiotic John Wayne bam-slam movie. The forties wasn't tough-talking gangsters and cigarette smoking bombshells. It's just Hollywood and TV. I don't know why any of us still buy into it. It's bullshit.

my life has not ever been defined by pop culture

...but here you are in fandom...

Yes...but I'm here now that F!S is dying. When it was popular, I wasn't.

I have access to more current pop culture things these days, but I'm still what most people would likely call "hopelessly out of date" when it comes to what I know about, view, or care even slightly about regarding any sort of film or TV show.

There are probably a couple of exceptions. I'm currently watching a cartoon made by Netflix as it unfolds. But most of the TV shows I liked in the last 10-plus years ended up being cancelled early or just disappearing. (Maybe that happens to a lot of people, IDK.)

Anyway. I was even less up to date as a kid. Very, very out to touch with the mainstream culture.

Chronically unimpressed by popular things? You're definitely a kid of the 80s.
