I think 80s nostalgia is largely prone to exaggeration, I mean this happens with other eras as well but I don't notice it as heavily with 90s set stuff as much as 80s set stuff.

Like the fashion in particular always feels exaggerated, like maybe rock musicians dressed that way but every day people didn't.

I wore power suits to work. I didn't need the shoulder pads, but all my jackets and a fair few blouses had them. The 80s were the last decade where people dressed with flair and panache. That alone is nolstalgia making.
