This doesn't sound like a bad idea to me, particularly if combined with a qualifier about people who've 1) apologized and 2) seem to be making a good faith effort not to screw up again. But yeah, it's never going to go down well with the most strident percentage of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-10 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Do what I do and just don't give a shit about one sort of off color thing someone said once in an interview.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-10 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't know a single soul who's never ever said a wrong thing once. Sometimes depends on the context details of the stuff said, but yeah basically. It's nice to hear an actor is a good person, but tbh I'm happy to never know anything about the person serving up my entertainment.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-11 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Agree. I feel like most of the time, when people say "off color" things in interviews and chat shows, they're probably just feeling some kind of pressure to be funny and entertaining. So, awkward, non-PC things are said because, well... people are human. It doesn't mean the person who said it is some irredeemably evil assbag who HATES [insert type of people].

(Anonymous) 2017-08-11 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
I personally don't pay attention to interviews or try to find info into an actor's personal life. Fandom spreading the info is another thing. Or trying to inform me of stuff... gets pretty annoying.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-10 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
My policy is to divorce character from actor. I like the character. Actors are just strangers.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-10 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Good policy. I concur, because nothing sours me on an actor faster than when they pontificate about current events.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-10 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Even setting aside any other considerations, I would have a hard time watching film scenes with an actor who I knew to be a Klansman or whatever. I just wouldn't be able to enjoy something like that.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-10 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I'll leave the celebrity sport-hating to ONTD.

Well, I mean, two things, really.

First of all, everything depends on the circumstances.

Second, everything is always down to your own judgment and decisions, always. As long as you're making those judgments in good faith and hold to them, that's got to be the ultimate arbiter of what you believe. You're responsible for your own moral judgments, and you're responsible for how your moral judgments affect your choices. Of course you might get yelled at regardless but that's life regardless.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-10 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here, though I guess my "statue of limitations" is a bit shorter (usually two or three years). Unless, of course, the creator is still acting like a person who believed what they used to say.

It's really not a bad idea at all. Irrevocably writing something/one off forever over minor slights only seems to lead to being angry all the time. Sounds exhausting.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-10 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Does this also apply to friends and family? I suspect we'd all talk to very few people after awhile.

Dammmit, I don't want to play devils advocate here...

But the passing of 7 years is no indication that they now think any different. Going 7 years without voicing an opinion that landed them in the shit is not indicative that they think any different.

I've changed some of my opinions from 7 years ago, but others I am even more sure of now than I was 7 years ago.

I think this is a good thing. A lot of "problematic" things are said not because someone holds deep-seated problematic views, but because they're ignorant of something. And being ignorant doesn't make one "the worst" or whatever popular phrase of the day is being lobbed at people who aren't 100 percent in tune with the social justice keyboard warriors.

Honestly, holding something someone said against them for the rest of their life really does need a pretty good justification.

I just don't follow celebrities on the "say something stupid on television" circuit, or particularly care unless they do something particularly ugly

the only things Hugh said that I wasn't keen on had to do with him liking a movie and a TV show I can't fucking stand and that's just a matter of opinion.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-11 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
i was gon make a sarcastic comment but this is actually good

For just words, I can kind of see it.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-11 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
But even still, I'd have a hard time just letting the Mel Gibson thing go.

Would you put one on actions? Because I can't watch Roman Polanski or Woody Allen movies. I can't watch Bill Cosby in anything. I haven't seen anything with Johnny Depp in a while and I don't think I'm going to. And I'm not going to listen to anything with Chris Brown.

That's basically just saying context matters. If someone doesn't regularly say awful things, then what they said once was probably just a slip of the tongue. (Obviously it depends what was said, there are some things that are just gross.)
