My policy is to divorce character from actor. I like the character. Actors are just strangers.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-10 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Good policy. I concur, because nothing sours me on an actor faster than when they pontificate about current events.

Even setting aside any other considerations, I would have a hard time watching film scenes with an actor who I knew to be a Klansman or whatever. I just wouldn't be able to enjoy something like that.

Same. I'll leave the celebrity sport-hating to ONTD.

Yup.

Some actors seem nice and that's all very well and good but I'm here for the characters primarily so I barely pay attention to what the faces behind the characters get up to. I just don't care.

This.

A good and healthy outlook. Hate just eats your soul.

This is what I try to do (and the same with authors) but sometimes it just doesn't work.

I completely agree. Charles Dickens left his wife of 22 years for an 19-year-old, then insulted her in the newspaper. Some of my favorite cartoonists were Nazi collaborators. One of the lead actors of a show I like beat his first three wives. And that's not even getting into all the rock stars who've committed sexual assault or abandoned their girlfriends and children. So many of my favorite creators have done genuinely reprehensible things, I find it impossible to understand the idea of getting upset about something somebody said. If I restricted myself to fiction by people who have never so much as said anything wrong, I'd have to throw out pretty much every book, movie, and album I own.

What cartoonists?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-11 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
A number of Belgian cartoonists who were alive during WWII, most notably Willy Vandersteen, who drew antisemitic cartoons under the pen name Kaproen. (Although judging by his later work he either changed his mind or never believed the Nazis in the first place.)

I try, but sometimes it's difficult. I couldn't do it for Johnny Depp and Jack Sparrow and now PotC is ruined for me for the foreseeable future.
