Does this also apply to friends and family? I suspect we'd all talk to very few people after awhile.

That would be true if most people placed their friends and family at the same level of importance as actors they don't actually know. But to me, they're not the same at all. Cutting off Grandpa because he said something off colour last Christmas has a lot more impact upon me than deciding not to watch [insert name of movie here] because [insert name of actor here] said something bigoted on Twitter, so I'm going to approach those two very different situations very differently.
