Fantasies from the 80's are your best bet. Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Neverending Story, Willow, Legend... Princess Bride even had its dark moments... frightening imagery (great practical effects) and big evils to be fought - but still hope, perserverence, and lots of pretty scenery.

Yes!!! I loved all of the films you listed. Maybe they do not skew as dark as GoT but they're great films.

A dark world still with a sense of hope kinda describes Lord of the Rings to a T.

Have you considered Lord of the Rings? It can seem downright DARK at times, but there IS a sense of hope in the end.
