Yeah. This. I'm more inclined to believe that most people involved with Whedon's productions didn't actually know.

The only people who might've known were people who were in Whedon's inner circle, which seemed to be the actors and writers who'd gather at Whedon's house and do Shakespeare readings/jam sessions/brunch. That group, as far as I know, included Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Alyson Hannigan, James Marsters, Anthony Stewart Head, Amber Benson, and, later on, Michele Trachtenberg. There may have been more, but those are the names I specifically remember Whedon name-checking as part of his Shakespeare crew.

(Wow. See me pull up the gossip memory banks...)

But even there, I'm willing to bet not all of even Joss's inner circle knew about it. Although I wouldn't be terribly surprised if some of them did.
