“Hmmm, I really like fic about these characters having sex w/ other characters, but anything with a reader insert makes me feel so uncomfortable. It can’t be the bad writing, I’ve read other fic with bad writing. I wonder why… Oh! Ohhhhh.”

Reader/character fic helped me realise that I was asexual. So, uh, thank you, reader-insert writers. You’ve helped a lot of things in my life make a little more sense.

This is kind of relatable. I'm ace but I LOVE fic that has my OTPs getting it on, and sometimes even if it's not my OTP but it's a good story and the sex tells me something about that character, or like... I don't know, it can be fun to read, but yeah. Reader-insert stuff creeps me out, I don't want to be a part of things.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-07 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
(Ha, for a minute I thought this was a Pretender secret, because thoughtful!Stock-Photo Guy looks a bit like Michael Weiss.)

That's pretty cool OP. Did you have that same reaction to makeout and sex scenes in movies and TV, or just to Reader insert fics because of the "you" ?

(Anonymous) 2017-09-07 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not OP, but for me it depends. A lot of movie/TV scenes that are overtly sexual really bother me-- the ones where it feels like it's there to titillate the audience without adding anything of value to the overall thing can make my skin crawl. But if a scene is shot so that it's artistically beautiful, then I can appreciate it without it registering as 'sex' so much as just art.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-07 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
From the nose up, I can totally see Michael T. Weiss there!

I'd totes go for a Pretender reboot if, like the X-files fan wishes, we could leave out all the mytharc conspiracy crap.

I'm another ace person who isn't OP. For me, if a movie/show can make me care about the characters' relationship and make me want them to get together, then I'll be totally into the onscreen sexytiems. But if it's more HBO-style sex, where it's like, "Here's another long scene of fucking to keep the viewers happy" then I just find it annyoing. Not repulsive, the way reader-insert is for me - just boring, and like, "Oh please, not more of this."

Although tbh, I despite reader-insert fic so much that I'm honestly not sure if it's just down to being ace. I kind of think I'd hate reader insert fic even if I weren't ace. I think it's just massively not my thing in every way. (Not hating on people who like it or saying they're wrong to do so, though.)

(Anonymous) 2017-09-08 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
i thought most people weren't big fan of those on tv/movies regardless of ace

(Anonymous) 2017-09-08 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was Johnny Lee Miller at first glance.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-07 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK if it makes me asexual, but make-believe sex is the only sex I'm interested in.

I love reader insert fic.

Asexual - noun
a person who has no sexual feelings or desires.

If you "really like" reading fic about sex, you aren't asexual, just uncomfortable with sex

-A real asexual who is tired of people like you

(Anonymous) 2017-09-07 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Why are you tired of people like me?

Hey look, I can use Google too!

Asexuality is a sexual orientation, like homosexuality or heterosexuality. And like being straight or being gay, it’s about what someone feels, not what someone does. Dating, having sex, masturbating, falling in love, getting married, or having children do not conflict with asexuality in any way. There are many reasons why an asexual person might do these things that do not require sexual attraction to be present.

Hold on, so is a lesbian that likes slash, attracted to men in real life?

This will be news to so many people.

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-09-08 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
And I'm tired of people like you telling me what my sexuality is. Figuring out that I am not sexually attracted to people irl has made things much clearer in my life and I am very content. Me saying I'm asexual will not take anything from you, but it makes my own life happier and calmer. And you can't take that away from me. In the same way a lesbian can read slash and not suddenly be bi, I can read/enjoy smut fic and not stop being ace.

Wrong.

Some asexuals enjoy reading/thinking about characters (as in, entities who are not them) having sex. That absolutely does NOT mean they want to have sex with someone themselves.

I've been reading and enjoying smut featuring my various ships for fifteen years. But guess how many times I've been sexually attracted to someone myself? Zero. Zero times.

I have a love of eroticism, and filthy, filthy smut. It just so happens that none of my erotic fantasies involve me, at all, ever.

I've considered this... Reader insert fics make me uncomfortable and I'm fairly sure I'm some type of asexual. But I also dislike reader insert fics that aren't sexual at all? Like, reader is part of the team, or reader is some character's daughter, or whatnot. Sometimes these will still have a romantic component, but not always. Plus, I usually don't finish them. I come across them when I'm scrolling through tumblr, see just enough to realize it's reader insert, get squicked out, and that's it.

I'm truly happy that this has helped you figure yourself out. I'm just wondering what my problem is, I guess?

I don't like those fics and I almost never fantasize about my favorite characters sexually except with each other, not with me.

In my case it's not that I'm asexual, it's that I have such a hard time picturing anyone being attracted to me.

If I fantasize about anyone I have to think of some reason they are really desperate.

(Yeah, I know I sound pathetic and stupid.)

I'm not asexual, and reader insert fics make me feel very awkward and uncomfortable. It's not only asexual people who find them embarrassing.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-08 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
my problem with xreader smut is that xreader is written as if someone was addressing me and i don't want to be addressed by strangers when im trying to get off fantasizing about some character banging me

(Anonymous) 2017-09-08 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not asexual and x Reader fics make me uncomfortable. I wonder what that means then.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-08 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I feel ya OP, I had to find out that Asexuality even existed from TV TROPES of all places. As soon as I realized it was a thing I was like "OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH," biggest eureka moment of my life tbh. So yeah, ace high five.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-08 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
I get laid about 5-6x a week (an aside to those thinking marriage ruins your sex life, we've been married 18 years) and I hate reader insert fic.

2nd person present tense would kill my libido dead if I read that shit.
