To convince people who are concerned about their weight that they can eat chocolate and still be as thin as Audrey Hepburn.

You don't think that the purpose of putting thin, attractive people in commercials is to convince consumers that if they purchase the product, they too will be thin and attractive?

I don't think they give two shits about people's intelligence good or bad, they just do what they know works, and there is a long, clear history of skinny, attractive people being an effective way to sell things. Scoffing at it doesn't make it untrue.
