Maybe, but I also thought I heard Gabaldon was inspired by Doctor Who? So there could be some intent there.

Of course, her first few books came out long before that episode of Doctor Who, so.

Yes. Jamie Fraser was inspired by a companion in the early years of Doctor Who. The secret mentions it specifically.

Seriously? Jamie was inspired by Jamie??

I guess it makes a kind of sense, Scottish dude and time travel involved, etc., but I'm sort of blown away. I didn't realize Jamie from Dr. Who was a sexy icon or anything, which the other Jamie is support to be I think.

(I never got into it at all. I've read enough things about the series to turn me off, so it's all second hand.)

Yeah.

Which makes it pretty ironic that Gabaldon famously threw a fit over fanfiction, calling it "immoral" and comparing fanfiction to white slavery and seducing her husband:

well now i want to watch this show just so i can write intentionally terrible fanfiction

Hypocrisy really isn't a great look.

It's like... she's okay writing the historical King of France as a rapist, but someone writing her characters having consensual sex is icky?

That's where she draws the bounds of respect and privacy?

LOL, right? Obviously one is legit historical fiction and one is like selling her children into slavery. Even the "child" she borrowed from Doctor Who, which is totally not the same thing as fanfiction.

Doctor Who stole that image from The Shining.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-12 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Here I thought it was The Wrath of Khan they were all stealing it from. (What scene is it in The Shining? I've never seen that movie.)

Pyramus and Thisbe, if we're going to play this game

Yep.

Sure if you like the writings of spineless human being who sicced her fans on a cancer patient (including releasing personal info) because somebody *dared* to do fanfiction of her works for a charity auction.
