I've never minded the steampunk or elves or faries, and don't care if someone is having fun in their cosplay, but it's weird to me when I see people in renfest garb or straight-up historic dress at scifi cons. I feel the urge to ask them if they are lost.

...but I don't, because it's all just for fun.

I'd just wonder if they are cosplaying LotR or GoT, or other similar fantasy media.

I would recognise LotR and they don't wear Regency gowns in GoT!

LOTR is quite different than your typical historical Renfest type garb. GoT is too, but the differences are a bit more subtle, I guess.

That's a little strange to me, since aren't "scifi cons" really shorthand for "fantasy and scifi cons"? I'm pretty sure the genres are basically interchangable in geek worlds, so seeing fantasy (and historical, since fantasy as a genre is pretty rooted in pseudo-history) costumes seem totally natural.

I'm cool with the fairies, steampunk etc, but I draw the line at the fucking anime cosplay I've started seeing.

What if it's a sci-fi anime?

(Anonymous) 2017-09-13 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? That's ridiculous. Sci-fi cons are general geek conventions, anime has always fit into the category.

I've worked my way through a bunch of costumes from Lloyd-Webber Phantom of the Opera at cons, and if you don't know the show, a couple of them are basically 1880s daywear.

I feel the urge to ask them if they are lost.

They are. They traveled through time and now they're in this weird futuristic world.

It's cool though. Time travelling Xena will guide them home once they're done.
