A lot of the time it's not the seme/uke roles that bother people; it's the way the designated seme and designated uke are often written OOC and clumsily shoehorned into those roles.

I don't think there would be so much grumbling about this if more fanfics about that sort of relationship were well-written and didn't resort to having the characters act completely unlike themselves. A guy who's shown to be a badass in canon should not magically transform into an incompetent wimp as soon as he realizes that he likes being a bottom.

It's because the seme/uke dynamic is full of very hurtful stereotypes rooted deeply in sexism and homophobia. That you don't realize this is telling.

The problem is in the execution of the writing. When you're writing something such as seme/uke roles that have such a history of homophobic and sexist stereotypes you have to be really attentive to how you're writing those roles. However a lot of the time in fanfic (at least that I've read) people don't care about characterization or damaging stereotypes or any of that and just fall back on shoving OOC characters into these rather insulting roles.

So liking the trope isn't problematic in itself, but you should really be aware of the problematic nature of the trope.

I don't mind seme/uke dynamics myself.... if it's canon. if it's characters that were written intended to be controlling abusive tops or written to be crying submissive bottoms bring it on bb nothing wrong with characters like that

but I mind it when people go this other character is tall therefore he is seme, he is short therefore he is uke, correlation is not causation, all characters do not follow your stereotypes. the original material written that is intended to hit a yaoi kink is fap fodder like any other fap fodder, w/e. but its the fandom that insists on shoehorning other things into yaoi tropes that annoys me

Thing is though, it's rarely treated as just an erotic preference, but rather something that defines each partner's personality, and whole role in life.

Whereas you get very, very dominant and forceful people in their daily lives IRL that love to bottom in the bedroom, and vise versa. Yet that never seems to happen in yaoi, or at least when it starts out that way, it gradually shifts back to conform to the same stereotypical roles (uke is more "feminine" being the most common).

If there were plenty of six foot burly ukes who loved hunting and NASCAR running around with their five-six semes who loved interior design and for their partner to make most of the decisions, except when they fuck in the bedroom, I'd be totally fine with it.

OP... I like Seme/Uke dynamics too. I know most of the stories are not a realistic portrayal of a healthy relationship, and that it doesn't acknowledge a lot of the problems. I like switch pairings too, but a lot of that kinda depends on the characters. Sometimes I don't care, and sometimes I have a preference for seme/uke.

But anyway, I feel you OP. I'm currently getting hate mail from someone that doesn't like how I never write a certain character as a top.

Screw the haters, OP. It's fine to like a particular dynamic and have that as a kink provided that you're not trying to claim it applies to all real gay people. Liking dominant semes to pin down and ravish delicate, big eyed ukes isn't homophobia. TBH, the people trying to claim that seme/uke dynamics NEVER EVER EVER happen in real life are the ones I'd consider to be speaking for all gay people and by denying the experiences of some, are engaging in a manner that's unfortunately close to homophobia.

It's a kink. There's nothing wrong with kinks. Using the terms to describe real people without their consent and approval would be offensive. Using the terms to describe the roles played by fictional characters is not.

OP, let me say a few things.

You say in this thread that you only associate it with fiction and don't associate it with real people ever and you don't perpetuate the stereotypes, or at least that's what I'm getting. All right. Here's the thing that's making people upset: intent isn't magical. You can say this, and mean this, but it'll come across entirely different to some people who are homosexual and aware of where it came from.

You can't stop people from being offended, and you can't just write them off because you didn't mean it like that. There is still a very offensive and rather recent history to this. So yes, it hurts some people. And you can't just be snide and says, "Well I'm sooooo sorry my fapping hurts you."

You can like it, yes. People like problematic things all the time. YKINMKATOK and all that. But you can't stop people from getting upset, and you can't dismiss them.

Maybe one day there will be new words with a less homophobic history that fulfill the tropes. Until then, at least admit that this kink is problematic and that it will upset people. Just like if you had a rape kink.

Ok, my opinion on this. . .extremely loaded secret.

And, if anyone does reply to this and dares to call me a homophobe, seriously, slink back into your corner of the internet. I have known and liked and accepted people online and off of pretty much every sexual orientation, and I have been the first confidant of a coming out of the closet for three separate gay men. I am an open minded and educated individual, so don't even try it.

First, saying that liking this dynamic is 'wrong' is potentially very offensive to many people. As mentioned above, there ARE people who do ascribe to these roles in relationship (I personally have been very close friends before with a man who knew he would only like to be a sub); there are also people who do not. The key here is that the person reading the yaoi is aware of the diversity and does not automatically try to force these roles on everyone he/she meets. If OP is aware of this, then I don't see the problem.

Also, saying "you can't like/fap to something potentially problematic" is. . .not good. Lots of people fap to problematic things; in the past several days f!S & the anon meme has had several threads on allll the problematic/weird things all of you (and I) enjoy/fap to. Realize it's viewed as problematic to some people and why, and treat people well in your life, and you should be all fine.

I used to read yaoi. I don't really anymore, but that's more due to the fact that it's hard to find for my fandom now. I actually find fanworks are often done better than licensed stuff when it comes to anything involving same-sex couples, even if it is just explicit sex.

So. I don't find anything wrong with you reading them if you can find stuff you like, and I will go and be envious over the fact that you can find stuff you like in it.

Of course you can have an erotic preference. But your stuff is everywhere, so you'll have to excuse those of us who like it the other way around (like Shuichi topping Yuki even though I don't like Gravitation, Fai topping Kurogane, Sanji topping Zoro etc.) for feeling frustrated when we have actual trouble finding things that speak to our preferences even when the pairing is popular and wishing there would be a little less of your stuff and more of ours.

It's also pretty frustrating when you make fanart/fic that switches the typical seme/uke roles for the characters and there's always someone coming along to tell you they think it's weird to see it like that because "Zoro is too manly to like it up the butt, it just looks weird".
