I don't have a problem with what a person is (whether I agree with them or not), but it doesn't have any relevance to the fact I'm reading fan fiction, lmao.

That's the sort of background information/disclaimer/confession I'd expect to see someone share before diving headlong into a SJ debate, not before posting a story. How did they get the idea that it was required everywhere?

I think part of the reason people do this is for the same reason they like taking personality surveys: they like to minutely pick apart what makes them special and an individual because it makes them feel more important, while also giving them a sense of camaraderie with a group they feel should like them for belonging in that group.

I have no idea if it makes them a bad writer or not (I rarely see this kind of thing in the first place), but it does seem incredibly unnecessary and ridiculous.

Generally if someone posts fic to Tumblr (actually on their blog instead of just posting a link to ao3/ff.net/lj/etc.), I won't read it. In my experience, they are all shitty writers. I have yet to find an exception.

Personally I roll my eyes when people introduce themselves that way. Unless it's relevant to the conversation/story I don't *care* what you are.

Yeah, I agree. Between blanding their writing down so as to be innocuous and soapboxing whatever their cause this week is, and frankly just being used to getting attention for reasons other than quality writing, their fics tend to be ... not really bad, that would almost be better, but incredibly mediocre with a side of shrill. Plus the writer's scream out that they are incredibly touchy, so leaving a comment is a bit of a craps shoot. Not worth it.

I don't think I would be able to read them either because my eyes would be rolling so hard that they would never be able to settle down and focus on the written word.

...Maybe I'm missing something here, but isn't the profile where you go to learn more about whoever's doing the writing? Therefore shouldn't it have a reasonably concise (meaning probably a lot of labels) introduction to who the person behind the writing is? So if you don't care... why not just read the fic or whatever and not look at the profile? I'm kind of confused here.

Not that I don't kind of agree, but that's one reason I rarely look at profile pages. I'd rather get a feel of who the person is through what they're saying than read a description that can't help but be biased in one way or another.

I generally have zero desire to read anything by anyone who puts up a huge bio or 'about me'. Unless we know each other, IDGAF who you are, I want to read your fic. Ugh, I remember back on fanfiction.net when some people wrote huge text walls in their profiles about their lives and their favourite movies and their favourite quotes. Usually the sign of a bad writer.

I hate irrelevant author's notes in general. I don't care about your inside jokes with your friends. If it doesn't stand alone in the context of the story, edit that shit out. I don't care that the reason you gave [character] profession/hobby/major [x] in your AU is that you share it. I don't care about your politics unless you're confessing to me that this story is about to be a tract for them in which case, duly backclicked. Thanks. I. Just. Do. Not. Care.

Where are you seeing these lists? If it prefaces the fic, yeah, that's a bit odd. If it's on some profile page or their tumblr or something, who gives a fuck? It's there to summarise who you are. A lot of labels like that - race, gender, sexuality and so on - do often inform a large part of someone's life.

If they don't, that's fine, but if they do, why not mention it? (It's also a way to - well, some people will have a problem with you being queer or trans or whatever else. This way they already know and you won't accidentally befriend someone who suddenly goes OH I HATE THOSE FUCKS.)

And personally, if I end up in some kind of SJ debate, I like people to know where exactly I'm coming from, without typing all that shit up every time.

I remember commenting that "Even though I want to accept people... this is pushing it" and that there were several replies agreeing with me.

anyone who puts in their profile that they're 'cisgender/cissexual' as if that's such a ~huge~ part of their identity is usually insufferable

same with cisspecies/singular or whatever the fuck else, it strikes me as some creepy 'look look, I know these words! aren't I a great ally!' nonsense

and especially in the case of species/otherkin/multiples cause those groups don't need non fucknut crazy people validating their fucknut craziness out of some desperate attempt to look 'accepting'

Every time I see the word "demisexual", I start screaming as loud as I possibly can while punching myself in the face. It's much less painful than the slew of special snowflake drivel that inevitably follows.
