I would tend to agree with you.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-22 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. It's cool that you make them, but it's not like you doing anything other than translating an existing work to other medium. There isn't that much creating from scratch going on.

Just curious: does anyone here listen to podfic? They must be a great help for the visually impaired, but how many listen to them for other reasons? Personally I don't, because I read so much faster and like to imagine the characters' voices in my head.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-22 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I refuse to go near podfic. It's like a warning beacon of second hand embarrassment. The mere thought of it is just such a turnoff.

And I wouldn't say that podfic is some great contribution to blind fandom. Blind fans will already know how to get their fix, be it through their existing reading programs or braille.

I listen to them while cleaning or cooking. Like a little radio show, only it's fic.

Also, the other reason is when I'm interested in comparing different takes on the same fic. There's the fic I'll read, with whatever pace/cadence/etc. I'll imagine, and then there's the fic when read by someone else who emphasizes certain words or things like a certain tone at points I pictured differently. It's, without trying to sound completely ridiculous, like audio fanart of a fic.

So wait a minute.

Podfic is just people reading fanfiction and acting like this is a big deal? I thought it was fanfiction written specifically to be heard as audio--like a radio play with more narration. Is that not the case?

Agreed.

For that matter, I kind of hate when fanwork exchanges allow podfic (or fanmixes, come to that). It's just...disappointing to receive something I could do for myself, especially if it's based off of something I've already done.

Honestly, I don't like it either.

Every podfic I've found is usually someone either rushing through reading a fanfic to stay withing some recording time limit or they're under/over doing it. Basically, it's never done with any level of professionalism.

I'm afraid so. Obviously, there is work involved and it takes time and there is some craft, but it's just no where near what is needed to write fic or create art.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-22 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really have much opinion on podfic, other than that someone podficced one of my stories once, and it was kind of flattering (they asked first).

I've occasionally thought it might be fun to try (I'd probably do my own stories, rather than other people's), but I don't like the way my voice sounds.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-22 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm wondering exactly which fandoms people have been listening to podfic in?
Yes there are some not so great readings out there, just as there are fanfic which make you wince and backclick a paragraph in, but there are also some absolute gems of readers.
People like Fayjay who has recorded fic in more fandoms than I can count, but her reading of her own Merlin fic The Student Prince is amazing and her version of Wordstring's Sherlock series is ridiculously good.
Emilianadarling has done some lovely readings too and off the top of my head jinjurly and pennyplainknits are both enjoyable.
A good reader can make even the most silly fic enjoyable to listen to, just like a good writer can spin a cliche into something wonderful.
Podfic may not be to your taste, and that's absolutely fine, you don't have to listen to it, but to be so derogatory towards an entire area of fan contribution is incredibly rude and dismissive towards people, some of whom have spent an incredible length of time on their readings.

It depends on whether your judgment is really solely based on how well-performed the narration is. The overall ability to enjoy a podfic is definitely heavily affected by the quality of the original work, but when you're simply judging the podfic itself there is talent involved in putting that together, even if it's more a performance than a creation.

I am speaking as someone who has never listened to a podfic, though. I have no idea if there are many people out there who are very good at it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-22 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
The right delivery can make a bad fic enjoyable, but those tend to be more in the vein of parody than straight podfic, including commentary and such.

I feel like a lot of people in this thread are underestimating the amount of skill, effort, and creativity it takes to narrate well.

I mean, no it's not the same as writing, but that doesn't mean there's no creativity involved.

I'm a podficcer (and a famixer, for that matter since it was mentioned upthread).

I'm also a writer, vidder, and a budding artist. I like the multimedia, it seems like.

Does it take more time/energy/creativity for me to write a fic than it would for me to record a podfic of the same fic? Certainly. Does it make the podfic any less a valid fanwork than the fic? I personally don't think so.

A lot of people use podfic the same way they would use audiobooks: to put them on their iPod/MP3 player to listen to in situations they wouldn't be able to read (like when they're driving/walking, or out for a jog or run), but would still like to consume the media.

I'm a podficcer and some of the OTT defensiveness in the podfic community embarrasses me at times. I love some of those people, but they do get passionate about it. :|

Yes, it's reading aloud fic. It does involve time, editing skills and just like any other fan related media, the quality can vary widely. But it's reading aloud fic, usually someone else's fic, regardless of the tone and interpretation a reader brings to the story, it's still the author's story.

Not everyone is going to want to listen to it, no big deal. I see it as an accompaniment to the original piece but it's not the original fan material.

If you look at audiobooks on sites like audible.com you'll see the cover art is usually the same as for the printed book and the author's name is the name that's most prevalent, the reader's name often in very small print.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-22 03:14 am (UTC)(link)

That being said I will fucking FIGHT anyone who says the acting required for reading a work aloud isn't art.

Tim Curry in the Abhorsen trilogy made my very *existence* when he voiced a female dog begging for a bone.

Jim Dale gave Dumbledore a voice no actor will ever capture.

Mathew Wolf made certain character I found simply annoying in the text so over the top they became glorious. (The Dwarves by Markus Heitz, it's the last audio book I finished and I highly recommend it.)

Now, I'm going to go out on a limb and say not everyone in podfic is on the level of Tim Cury (GASP!) but it's pretty rough of you to rule an endeavor as "non art".

Plus, the "colorist" get's his/her own credit in comic books, that shit is art too.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-22 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I can't listen to people read to me. It ruins everything. I don't get to set the pace or imagine the characters voices. It's even worse than audiobooks. It totally takes me out of the story. I literally cannot comprehend how other people enjoy it.

I can't stand podfics, or audiobooks for that matter

But what really annoys me is how some great fic authors have been suckered into thinking podfic is high art and have turned to that instead of writing.
