The definition of fandom

I posted a bit about this the other day, but my wording was off and it came across as a bit wanky, so I'm trying again.

What has confused me lately is that people say they're in fandoms, and yet don't do anything with them. I'm mostly referring to fandom friending memes (where I add people in my fandoms, and they end up never once doing or talking about anything that has to do with fandom), or fan communities where no one will discuss anything, and when you ask why, the response is generally "there's nothing to talk about." Um.

However, my thinking is that I may have a more dated definition of fandom, because I got into it back when the internet was a lot more insular and most people who used it were overanalytical obsessive types who were online to do fandom things. Not only fandom things, and not all internet users were fandomers, but that was one of the reasons you'd go online, unless you were in it for the AOL chatrooms. So maybe I'm confused, and confusing other people, because I still think of fandom as meaning "I want to talk about this thing all the time and have headcanons and fanfic ideas and I want more fic" whereas most people nowadays have a far more casual outlook on it.

What do you guys think? Am I just old school? Or is it LJ fandom and I need to cave in and go tumblr?

Anyone besides me have little-to-no clue how to read it? Pokemon

How do you play? Do you "gotta catch em all!" or do you just catch as many as you have the patience for? Do you play in a linear way or do you double back on yourself a lot? How do you organize your team?

I don't really have a solid "team". I have about 20 pokemon I use most often and I like to use every one I catch in a battle at least once. So they aren't as strong as they should be. I get bored of using the same pokemone and moves grinding to level up pretty easily, so I switch out a lot.

I like to wander and double back to do different idle things - I'm playing Pokemon X and I've dyed my hair so many times and blown most of my money on clothes. Right now I'm trying to catch a bunch of Evee's so I can try evolving them to different types.

Are you in fandom because of how much you love your specific thing (show/movie/book etc), or are you in fandom because fandom?

For me, it's definitely the former. I have gotten involved heavily in one or two fandoms because I so adore the source material and want more and more - whether fic, meta, art or whatever. Getting obsessed with the source material is an accidental thing, and if my interest wears off, I quit being part of fandom.

Whereas I often see people scrabbling around for more and more fandoms, or specifically hunting for things to be fannish over if nothing jumps out at them, and as far as I can tell, they just like the process of being in fandom, moreso than the actual original material.

So, which are you?
