"This doesn't apply to me."

(Anonymous) 2017-03-19 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's be hypothetical and say I start a topic on going to Disney World. Someone in the comments says something like "I have no interest in Disney."

I've never understood why people do that. Is it sarcasm? Is it light trolling? Or are they trying to contribute to the conversation, but don't realize it's annoying when you're really excited about something and it feels a bit... quashed?

If you do tend to do this, please explain. It's something I've never understood but am willing to if the intention really isn't to be snarky.

They are Debbie Downers. They want everyone to know that they hate 'the thing' just because.

I sometimes do that if the question is posed as a genuine gauge of interest. If someone is asking "how many people here are interested in Disney?" or "what are your thoughts on Disney?" saying "I have no interest in that" is a valid answer.

If someone is talking about how they're excited for a new movie, butting in about how much you don't give a shit is deliberately being a dick.

On what kind of board? Something like fandom!secrets?

I think f!s's culture is that every secret and every comment is a free-for-all conversation starter. I can see how it's annoying when you just want to gush about something you love, but I genuinely don't think most people are deliberately trying to rain on anyone's parade. With the whole anonymity factor, I think we all kind of keyboard blab quickly without overthinking it, and we're mostly just looking to casually chat.

I mean, I think it's a little silly when someone's answer is like... a lack of answer. Like in your Disney example. It's a little bit of a non-starter to say "I have no interest in Disney". I'd almost prefer someone say "I had a bad experience at Disney World / am boycotting it due to corporate corruption in Disney / whatever" because at least we can chat about it then. What are you supposed to say to someone just saying "not interested"?

This reminds me of people who comment on my fanart and say, "I hate this series, but cool art!"

It's like, I appreciate the compliment but I don't care how you feel about the series? Especially if it's something I'm drawing fanart for, you should take the hint that I like it and not give your opinion if it's too negative (I don't mind if you want to start a conversation critiquing certain aspects but just saying "I hate it" comes off rudely.)

Honestly if I do this it tends to be because I'm bored and there is not really a conversation going on that I'm interested in.

Re: "This doesn't apply to me."

There are definitely people out there who believe that anyone introducing a topic in public forum wants a response of any kind, even an unhelpful or negative one, therefore they're in the right. Of course, if the OP is the one to complain, why then they're being unreasonable because posting about X means you have to be tolerant and appreciative of any comment tangentially related to X, even if it's a passive aggressive remark about how much X sucks.

People are jerks, sometimes.

House Guests

(Anonymous) 2017-03-19 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
My family are coming to my new house for the first time! I'm super excited but also stressed trying to make everything perfect, which is silly because it's my family and they'll love me no matter what and my mom is the best person in the world to guide me how to decorate. Anxiety doesn't care about logic though ):

How do you handle house guests? Do you get stressed or are you a unicorn? Ok, maybe not a unicorn but after I started typing I couldn't think how to phrase it because it's unimaginable to me that anyone could just take it in stride to have people come to their house and stay there. For like a week! Eep!

Siblings/family relationships in fiction versus real life

(Anonymous) 2017-03-19 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't think I've ever seen anyone post about this. As an only child (and aspiring writer) I always wonder how accurately siblings are portrayed. They either seem to be super close, hate each other or get along well enough but aren't really involved in one another's lives beyond "hey sis! "hey bro!". Personally I find this to be fairly true, but while I know people with siblings it's not like I've observed them from afar and taken notes.

Can extend this to other family relationships too, if you'd like, as a nod to the Gilmore Girls secret.

2. ask others questions!

Things you want to try because you saw it in fiction

(Anonymous) 2017-03-19 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone have anything they want to try - whether something like a food, or a skill like an instrument or other practice - because you saw it in fiction?

Have you actually done it? Anyone actually successfully developed any new skills after being inspired by fiction (as opposed to just try it once)?

Who was the character/what was the series that inspired you?

Do you have any association memberships or regular charities?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-19 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you a "member" or regular donor to any association/nonprofit/professional circle? If so, what?

I just renewed my membership for a few history-related associations I'm in. I also donate to Amnesty International (I think I'm considered a member? or just on their list? idk). Am looking for a good pro-environment group to donate to as a small effort to feel less bad about the inevitability of climate change.

What stupid things have you gotten into an argument over?

No, that's shit and old. What's the current new flavour of wankery?

Bioware fans are whinging about sexuality options in Mass effect, Anyone got any spicy opinions on that? Other than the obvious point that bioware fans doing gender and sexuality wank is almost an advertiser feature of the game by now.

A request

[personal profile] thewakokid 2017-03-19 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
My laptop is fixed but wiped. Meaning, I now have a fuck ugly wallpaper.

I'm wondering if anyone has any resources they would care to share, eiither for websites, or specific wallpapers.

I'd like something sexy, well drawn, and geeky. You know comics, games, anime, blah.

My old one was this beautifully drawn Adam Hughes Lara Croft number, but it might be time for a change.

Any recs?

Yes California

(Anonymous) 2017-03-19 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you guys think of the Yes California movement? Basically California becoming its own country through a constitutional amendment.

I'm kind of for it. It would please the "red" states that hate California on principle, it would please California because they could make more of their own laws (and spend less supporting less prosperous states), and basically, it's big enough to be a country on its own in every single way, so why not?

I'm not sure how this would affect the country, though. Would it stop being the United States? Would it trigger a lot of states wanting to secede...or would it all go horrible wrong with economic troubles everywhere?

I don't think it's likely in the near future, but it's interesting to think about. I don't see a problem with it, but maybe there is one (or many).

Beauty and the Beast

(Anonymous) 2017-03-19 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Went to see it today and loved it! Usually I don't enjoy add-in songs, but I really liked the song Beast sang when Belle left to save her dad.

I also enjoyed LeFou and while I know people were concerned about his being gay and a villain problematic, I don't find it was distasteful or off?

I mean, he grew as a person (as much as one can in a Disney flick) and certainly wasn't ever one-note even throughout the beginning.

I was definitely lukewarm on Emma during the first half of the film though. She seemed sort of... blah.

When did Character x Reader become common again?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-20 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, more power to the author or whatever, but I really wish they hadn't gotten so popular. Seems like there's no fandom anymore without Reader fics anymore.
