What a charmingly sheltered life you must lead...

I'm really not sure how it's sheltered to dislike calling things "trashy"

I mean, the reason I dislike it is because it's almost irredeemably classist and condescending IMO

Plus it also almost always seems to stem of a place of, "Well I don't like this so it's trashy."

What happened to, other people like things doesn't mean you have to like them and that's okay?

You can say, "I can't see myself committing to a fandom tattoo." or "I'm not really a tattoo person." without putting down someone else.

I have what would be considered a fandom tattoo I guess? It's the design off of my favourite band's (favourite member's) guitar pick because their music got me through some rough patches healthwise. I have no regrets about it at all.

I basically agree with this. Like, I'm not waging a personal war to get the word trashy excised from common usage or anything. But I try not to use it. I find it a little too close to "slutty" in terms of socially constructed, so-subjective-they're-meaningless concepts based on arbitrary and often unjust modes of evaluation.

It's not sheltered to dislike calling things trashy, but that isn't what the anon said. Anon said "anyone who believes in the idea of trashiness", which isn't the same thing. Disliking calling things trashy is reasonable. Claiming to lack respect for people who recognize that the concept of trashiness exists isn't.

The concept of trashiness is "bad in a low class way". I don't believe in using low class as an insult that way. Therefore I don't like the idea of trashiness.

Also there's the whole "low class=trash" equation there. And trash is a pretty damn dehumanizing thing to call someone.
