Just curious, how would you change/improve the visuals, if you were able to do that?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-13 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Casting is a big one. I'd have a Frodo who looked like a retiree, elves who look like elves, an older Thorin, and so on. I'd also change up the looks. The Hobbits shouldn't be so thin, the dwarves should have actual beards, the Numenorean-based peoples (Dunedain and Gondor) should be taller than the Rohirrim, etc.

The landscape was all wrong too. It should look lived in and like Europe. There should be more ruins and more people. This part of Middle-earth has had people living in it for thousands of years, with wars and trade and empires, and all the stuff that comes from those things. The lonely mountain should've been on a plain and not near rocky cliffs like you see with the Laketown people. Rohan looked volcanic.

Some of the locations were really bad too. Gondor should look more Egyptian. Bree should've been a lot bigger. Elrond's house should've been an actual house. And so on.

"elves who look like elves"

Okay, how would you manage THAT? Hire actual elves?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-13 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
There are definitely people who look more elf-like. Do you really think Celeborn looked like an elf? Or Elrond with his receding hairline looked like an elf? I have seen actors who I think look similar to how I see elves. The ones in the movie were not that.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-13 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's true. The actors playing Celeborn and Elrond were far too old to be playing anything that appears young forever.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-13 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
What actors look most elf-like to you?

" Frodo who looked like a retiree"

What? Frodo is not that old yet in the books.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-13 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
He retires in the book. That's the whole pretense for him leaving his home. So, he should look like a retiree.
deird1: Fred looking pretty and thoughful (Default)

He's only been of age for about 13 years...

(Anonymous) 2017-05-13 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Er... do you mean Bilbo? Frodo doesn't retire in LOTR. He's just come of age.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-13 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
He doesn't even have anything to retire from, he's a country squire living on settled wealth in a totally pre-industrial idyllic pastoral society

The whole concept of retirement is totally alien to the shire

(Anonymous) 2017-05-13 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but LOL, this is a good point. I look at the life a typical hobbit leads and think fuck, THAT is what I want to retire to...

(Anonymous) 2017-05-13 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to mention that hobbits don't age the same way that humans do, and that possession of the One Ring slows aging down to an idiot halt.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-13 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
man I feel you so hard on Bree - that was the thing that made me walk out of Fellowship. Bree should have been a comfy, homey place with Big People and Hobbits living together in harmony, not a nightmare hellscape with troll-like humans lurking in the shadows.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-13 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely. But... wasn't the whole nightmarish hellscape thing a rather obvious POV from the hobbits, who were by then frightened by what they'd seen and been through and not necessarily reliable narrators?

The landscape was all wrong too. It should look lived in and like Europe. There should be more ruins and more people.

This is the one that bothers me the most.

So much of the landscape in the movies look like places where it would be impossible to imagine any people living. Even the places that aren't supposed to be wilderness! It's totally inhuman!
