If they find something they like and comment on that, then it isn't necessarily out of pity and it isn't necessarily lying.

To postively comment on something in OP's words they don't really like is a white lie at the very least. Especially since they have no obligation to do so.

If they're looking at something they don't like overall, and saying, "is there anything that I do like about this," and they're finding something that they do like, and then commenting on that, then it's not a lie.

it's not technically a lie, but it's dishonest of the whole picture

and something I'd rather not have done to me

Why does someone need to comment on the whole picture? And does anyone really, ever? People comment on the things that stick out to them, or on the things that they feel are most important. Some people think positive things are most important.

Because if my work's shit I'd like to know that it is.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-15 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
That's fair, but what's shit is subjective, and for some, being able to find something nice to say might be the thing that takes a piece out of shit-tier.

That's ridiculously black and white thinking. Very few works of fiction are 100% crap, so it's not inconceivable that OP can find something nice to say about it without pretending as though they love all of it unconditionally.
