It used to be my least favorite too, because as far as I remember it was devoid of scary Nazi villains and those were always my favourites when I was a kid. But I really liked the girl. Perhaps a rewatch is in order!

why did you like her? all she did was scream

I liked that she was fun and silly and didn't take herself so seriously, I guess. I understand why others may have found her annoying, though.

Also, I might be reading too much into her, but I kind of like that she was someone who was competent in her own sphere.

Alas, that may be true, but I saw the movie far too long ago to remember anything deeper about her. I think a rewatch is in order, definitely. (:

What I mean is just that like... she's not an idiot. She's a very successful singer. She just doesn't fuck around with jungle stuff.

I certainly wouldn't say that it's feminist by any stretch but it's not as bad as it could be.

Fair enough, good for its time, we could say. I remembered her needing a lot of rescuing, but again that was pretty much the standard in adventure cinema back then.

I like your interpretation, but my issue with that is that I don't recall very many moments (or any moments, to be honest) where we got to see her behaving competently. She mostly came off as a damsel in distress stereotype, maybe with the "feisty" setting turned up to 11. Does she have any moments where she isn't being comically in need of rescue or a downright hindrance to the hero?

I always loved it as a kid, for a long time I would have said it was my favorite, and rewatching it as an adult, it definitely does a lot of aesthetic and genre things that I still really like a lot. But like... it's just so fucking racist. It's so, so, so racist. I really want to like it but it's just at the point where it's basically impossible for me to ignore the racist bits and watch around them for the things that I like. It's kind of a bummer honestly.

So I guess that's kind of the opposite of your feelings in a way...

Gods yes. And I suspect it managed to quietly feed a lot of Kali as evil tropes you see floating around fantasy. (Right down to the "not all Hindus" lines. There's one nice series of articles about how Indiana Jones is a trilogy of conversion stories where the hero never actually converts.)

(Anonymous) 2017-07-13 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
That's definitely an interesting idea that deserves a lot of attention to drive down into it (the bit about Indiana Jones movies as conversion stories, I mean). I think the element that I hadn't noticed as much before my most recent rewatch, though, was the way that the film basically aligns itself with the British colonial presence in India - having the evil Prime Minister guy be resentful about the British presence and then having the British save the day and all that - so totally unnecessary.

Y...eah... I still like it, but I think a lot of it is the nostalgia value (and just that Indiana Jones is great, great action) but holy shit. I remembered the cult and was a bit squeamish about that, but having gone back and watched it again after a really long time of not seeing it, I had completely forgotten the "feast" at the Maharaja's, and the village of indigenous people fawning over the Exotic Whites, and it even managed to jam pack some good old fashioned Chinese stereotypes in there. It's... really uncomfortable now. I know, different times and all, but jesus god.

...yeah, pretty much. And I'm Asian, so it was kind of WTF back in the day.

I went to a special preview screening of Temple of Doom when it came out. I hated almost everything about it. I told all my friends not to go see it. (They didn't listen of course.)

I might be more able to enjoy it more now than I did when I was in high school and didn't understand things that were kind of "campy." But it's so racist I don't even want to touch it now.

The movie has its faults but I generally like all the Indiana Jones movies. Crystal Skull is my least favorite.

I'm pretty sure it was most people's least favorite, until Crystal Skull.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-13 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I always thought it had a few really good scenes and some great action sequences.

It's ALWAYS been my favorite and even though I realize now that it's a little bit racist, I still love it.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-14 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, sorry, OP. This one just barely squeaks past Crystal Skull due to the nostalgia factor in my book*. Racist mess with the worst love interest (ahem, I wonder why she was cast, Steven Spielberg) and annoying child sidekick? No, thank you.
