I didn't know people felt this strongly about John Smith

(Anonymous) 2017-08-12 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but the historical John Smith was a self-aggrandizing dickbag, so probably people do; I didn't realize the Disney character was supposed to be a good guy--but I haven't seen the film.

Oh absolutely, he was a colonizer after all.

I didn't know people had him as a favorite for......anything really.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, you're all the descendants of colonisers whatever generation of immigrant you're from. Unless America has somehow become completely legitimate and not stolen land? Nope, didn't think so.

I'm Jewish too but I forgave Mel Gibson 'cause he's a total drunk and was raised by an anti-Semitic, religious father.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-12 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, but did Mel Gibson actually see that he was wrong and change his ways, or did he persist in them. That's the crucial question, I think. At a certain point, no matter how you were raised, you're an adult.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-12 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure he has not had any negative Anti0Semetic stuff since then. And he has done work for some Jewish organizations.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-12 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
He hasn't gone on any drunken rants about it. I don't really think we know whether he's changed his mind and his behaviors, and it's hard to figure out how seriously to take a celebrity doing PR charity work.

But, you know, ultimately I don't know the man personally and I'll leave it there.

I think he has apologized since those remarks but I forgave him before that for my aforementioned reasons.

If you knew about his father Hutton you'd realize he probably has/had a lot to do with Mel's remarks.

Pretty much same. I'm loosely christian, but of Jewish decent and my opinion is "Mel Gibson does not care for my origin or my family. Meh"

If he hated my guys and people were patting him on the back for it, I'd probably have some issues, but as it is, one guy has problems with my people, I figure he's welcome to his hate, especially since and everyone else already hates him for it. I couldn't care less. Plus he has made some damn fine movies, so... Yeah.

for a guy everyone supposedly hates, a lot of people seem perfectly fine with paying the bigoted fucknuckle big bucks to be in movies....

[personal profile] thewakokid 2017-08-12 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Not as many people as before, tho... But you are correct. Let me re-word: "one guy has problems with my people, I figure he's welcome to his hate, especially since loads of people, the majority of people on social media at least already hates him for it."
greghousesgf: (Ewww!)

[personal profile] greghousesgf 2017-08-12 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
what the fuck is a guy who hates Jewish people, Black people and gays doing in show business anyway, that's like somebody who hates tall people playing basketball!

[personal profile] thewakokid 2017-08-12 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
This is true. I kinda wonder how it works for him. I know why they wanted to work with him, see the awesome movies, but how can he stomach to do the lethal weapon movies if he hates black people? I mean, it could be that he's not as bad as his drunken rants make him out to be, but even then that's a lot of shit to keep hidden.

if you take out everything in show biz that involves anyone Jewish, Black or gay all you'd have left would be Gilligan's Island and Let's Make a Deal, and I'm not too sure about the Skipper and Gilligan!

I remember shipping the hell out of Pocahontas/John Smith when I was a little kid. I was pretty bummed out when I learned the real story behind them.
sky_queen3: (Please be ok)

Do I want to know the real story?

She was like 12 years old, kidnapped by the settlers during the conflict against the natives and held captive until she converted to Christianity. Some historians argue that while Smith did meet and befriend her, the bit where she saved his life in a legendary gesture for peace was bull.

The straight-to-video sequel to the first movie was more historically accurate, because she actually did go to England, was presented at court, and married some dude named Rolfe, skipping the bit where happily ever after ended when she died young. Can't really write a Disney song to that...
sky_queen3: (Friendly rivals?)

[personal profile] sky_queen3 2017-08-13 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, ok, that does make shipping the Disney version awkward.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-14 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I recall much the same thing but also that she didn't even like John Smith. She only insisted her father not kill him because she was worried her people wouldn't survive the war that would come afterward.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
I loved John smiths voice and character design as a child, nypl.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
There's something to be said about separating the art from the artist.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-14 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Look, Roman Polanski is a shit but I still love the film Rosemary's Baby.
