IDK I don't feel like that's the case with most of the top box-office hits this year? Or the critical consensus on any of those movies?

The problem critics seemed to have with the new MIB was that it was too similar to the old movies, not that it wasn't depressing or X-rated.

True, I haven't followed movies all that much, so I kinda assumed it would be similar to the way of TV.
It's a pretty weak critic for a score so low though, like shouldn't it be good that a sequel is similar to the movies before it? It shouldn't be knocked just because it wasn't trying to be groundbreaking. Maybe it wouldn't have got a high rating because of that, but it should be at least around average...

Considering Star Wars TFA was a complete and total rip-off of the first trilogy but didn't didn't anywhere near the criticism for it it should have, I'm not sure why MiB is except that they are the second franchise to do it. And it wasn't Abrams, who is infamous for ripping off other people and pretending it is "homage" instead of laziness.
