I'm sure I remember Stephen King saying something to the effect of "That's a good horror movie but it has very little to do with my book."
2001 just confused the fuck out of me but I'm assuming that was its intent.

That was the intent. The first sequel book 2010, explains more of what is going on. And, in my opinion, is superior to the first book and movie.
