It's been a while since I read LOTR but, as I recall, with as much distance from each other as possible and only communicate with palantir calls.

This is accurate. And Saruman is planning on taking the Ring and double crossing Sauron because he thinks he's capable of that. And Sauron is well aware of Saruman's plans and has planned for Saruman's plans and is only using Saruman as long as he needs him. They hate each other.
